G'Day,

I may type a little funny as i'm getting 'comfortably numb' in Bangkok.

I've got a few old holdens and i have seen "GMH verified" bandied arround many times. What does this mean?

I thought that GM-H had destroyed the records pre 73

"I'll love you long time" for the answer

to expand on what james has said above...holden customer assistance can access some records and will give you a verification letter stating what it is...therefore it is gmh verified...
BUT...in some instances they get it very wrong, like my 71 ls350 hq coupe, the guy i bought it from had a letter of verification saying it was a gts350 coupe, maybe from information incorrectly supplied?.i recently sent holden customer assistance an email on the very same ls350 coupe and only gave them the psn number and to my dismay they sent me a verification letter stating what i already knew ..that it was a factory ls350...

not worth the paper its written on you give them the vin number they send you a letter sometimes the right stuff sometimes the wrong stuff as previously stated!!

but how do you know the vin number you give them even belongs to the car you have or are looking at?? so my thoughts are yes we can look at a car and think we know how genuine it is or isnt but because you have a holden letter thats meant to be proof yeah right!!

the new shells that are supposed to be here will make it even harder for people that dont know much as tags will be put on the new shells the same thing thats been happening with kingwood shells torana s shells ect ect the buyer will look at the holden letter and think great it matches there records!!

people are even staring to doctor the letters they get from holden to suit the tags they have check out the link below on this supposed to be ss i have never seen an ss hatch start with the vin 8C77 this letter is supposed to be the letter he was sent this is an sl hatch no doubt!!

now i started to think that cars with books are the way to go but even with books the same thing do the tags belong to that car?? so the letter means sxit but thats just my thoughts!!

That LX hatch was looked up in the records and the PSN is for an SL, GMH have the same records. Having said that it doesn't mean the letter was doctored, GMH get them wrong all the time.

i know byron they get it wrong but as you say the psn is for an sl gmh have the same records so how is it that the letter says ss just another blunder maybe???
im not saying for sure thats what he has done but i have seen cars with the letter of authenticity but thought somethings not right here i have enquired with the same psn the letter they send me is completly different to the one the owner has??

would be good to see what the letter would say on this car if someone else gave them that psn!!

so with all the mistakes they do just proves its not worth the paper they are written on!!

now the guy that has the hatch on ebay believes its an ss he now knows its not from the info most people have given him but doesnt believe anyone i dont think because of the letter!!

Yes I still think it is a mistake by GMH, seen too many to think otherwise. The bloke that owns the Hatchback must be confused, but you can't blame him. No-one will buy it though, so eventually he'll come to reality (unless someone like the car for what it is at the price asked).

the original question was .."what is gmh verified".not "is gmh verified worth the paper its written on"

the argument here now is...who else gives verification paperwork out?

absolutely no one..

on the same car i have an email from the monaro register confirming it authenticity.
who the fark is the monaro register?
they are not general motors holden and cannot use a gmh letter head so therefore a gmh verification letter to the majority of people and no doubt to an insurance company is the be all and end all of authenticity to a car wether they got ot right or not...

classic oz wreck i know what the question was mate i was saying peoples meaning of what is gmh verified is they think its the letter but it dont mean s***!!

you say the monaro register confirmed the car i used as an example to point out how they get it wrong is an ss with a vin tag starting with 8C77 wtf!!

the car in question is an sl hatch it makes more sence with a vin tag starting with 8C77 that they left the V out as you know ss hatchback,s start with 8VD77

8UH77 Torana SL (ex) or Sunbird hatchback.
8VB69 Torana S (six or V8) sedan.
8VC69 Torana SL (six or V8).
8VC77 Torana SL (six or V8) hatchback.
8VD69 Torana SL/R sedan.
8VD69 Torana SL/R 5000.
8VD69 Torana SL/R 5000 A9X sedan.
8VD77 Torana SS Hatchback.

Seems like a few here on this forum are putting on paper what the car is or is not and have declared its supposed authenticity or not. Has anyone seen this car before making these declarations. Oh! what car vin tag does start with 8C77, looks to me to be only half wrong. Is it half right or half wrong?.....Jack

bullit..you have missed my whole point...

it does not matter what the facts are and to wether it is right or wrong..

my point is if they do get it right it is the ultimate in verification to the average person as it has holdens name on it..

there is no other way to become gmh verified than to get that letter..and of course to hope they got it right..

Was told by holden that the records where destroyed for my Adelaide built 74 HQ Monaro gts/4, so how do they verify them with there own records if apparently alot of the records where"destroyed".

Yes John my point exactly. If no records exist at Holden then how can Holden verify a pre 73 vehicle?

Whilst at the Monaro Nats this year Norm Darwin did suggest that many of the records destined for the shreder, were taken by concerned employees.

So records may still exist but are in private hands

i do not know where they are getting the information but i do know this...
i emailed customer assistance and only gave them the psn and told them it was a 6/71 coupe.almost 3 months later a letter of verification showed up in the mail and it had the correct details for my ls350 coupe..
for anyone in the know an early hq ls coupe only ids as either a 6 or a v8 and does not distinguish the 350 option.
the letter dated 04/08/2010 states....the following details are taken from our records...

it was a discussion on this forum early last year that prompted me to try and get a letter of verification from holden as lots of virtuals were naysaying regarding records from holden.....

I suppose the more correct evidence you may have to prove a cars original identity is of great value. It would be the same when trying to prove anything. However if you do happen to get a letter back from GMH that you know is incorrect then where do you stand? Throw it away I suppose and hope the other evidence you have will prove what you want to prove.

8VD69 Torana SL/R 5000 A9X sedan.
8VD77 Torana SS Hatchback.
8VD77 Torana SS A9X hatchback.

The VIN plate is supposed to begin with 8C77 & NOT 8VC77 for an SL hatch.

The V is omitted on the VIN plate, with the full 8VC77 only seen on the body ID plate.
