G'day Everyone, I'm a newbie here and i'm about start on a major rebuild on a WB ute. I've built up quite a few of this era of Holdens and prefer them but this is the first one which will use a Chev engine and a full gas conversion, so i'll be needing some advice.

I bought the ute recently off ebay and it is what you can expect to get from there.... a bloody lemon. I won't bore you with the details right now but it was advertised as having minor rust, a 350 chev on gas (with a broken starter motor bolt) with a TH350, and has some goodies on it like a Statesman front end. It actually has quite a lot of rust, so much so that i think i'll just move the gear to a better body or something. Luckily i got it real cheap in the end so i could amost wreck it.
Looking under the car i noticed that it doesn't have a common crossmember fitted but rather a custom made one
now obviously i'd rather keep this one as to me it looks stronger than a standard one (and a standard one will be hard to find). I'm confident the crossmember will be rust free...look at all that oil! So, the question is, will this crossmember be okay for NSW rego? Otherwise it will have to be engineered into the car i'm guessing? Or does someone provide an engineered conversion already? I've used the search function and found the thread about crossmember differences but that doesn't actually help.

NSW? WHO REALLY KNOWS?...My guess is no ,dont use it and get a "normal" one unless you
have to get an engineers report anyway...NSW is different in every way to S.A..as I have found
out alot of times.thats all I can think of.they are harder to find.

Thanks Jim, Yeah i'll have to get it engineered alright. The closest engineer is in Sydney which is 800kms away so i want to get this thing right before i drive all the way down there! I see that Dellows has a crossmember kit (found an advertisement by using google) does anyone have any comments about this kit?

You may not need an Engineer's report for it, should be able to self Engineer in NSW as the engine is withing 15% of the largest engine available in WB sedan.

Byron,That's the engine(15%),not the cross member,I would think that would be a bit different.
Its a good reason to get a factory cross member though to avoid an engineers report(is that what you meant?).Computers are so un-personal,its hard to explain some things.

I doubt you'd need a report for the crossmember either.

WBute, unfortunately Bal is now retired and not taking on work, he was helping me with my long term Ford Jailbar project. Pity as he's a good bloke.

The way i understand it from the local rego bloke, i still need an engineers certificate for the 350. Its out of a '74 cop car (i think) and is only allowed to be in the WB with a full gas system fitted, which i have. So a question, should i be looking for a WB staesman TH400 crossmember or a HZ Statesman TH350 crossmember? I understand that i then have to narrow it and redrill.

TH350 CUT 1.5"INCHES EACH END AND REDRILL THE HOLES,EASY.

Original TH350 crossmember will be the easiest, from early WB or late HZ with factory 308 auto. I wouldn't botehr though, use the one you have unlessyou have to change.
The only reason you'll need to Engineer's Report is for the emissions, but as it is on straight LPG no dramas. Just read the NSW rules, quite clear on self-Engineered stuff. Just search on the RTA website for "light vehicle modifications".
