G'day All,

I plan to rebuild a 186 head to put on my 202 red motor, with hardened valve seats for unleaded use, what I need to know is , is it worth while and cost effective to get it flowed or port & polished while I'm at it or is that just overkill ? I'm not looking for a fire breathing monster engine, just a little more poke than the standard 202 has. Can somebody give me a rough idea of costs involved for the various mods, and whether it is worthwhile or not for an everyday work car. Thanks.

Hi Guys.

I agree with ^^^.

But stick with the 186 heads as you will have fully adjustable rocker gear. Other than this there is no other advantage, in compression etc. they are otherwise identical.

No no no. The 186 and the 202 share the same combustion chamber size (ignoring the XU-1). The head that will increase your compression is a 149/161 (early style rocker gear) or a 130/138/173 (202 style rocker gear). Just because it's a commercial vehicle

Hi Guys.

I agree with Byron, if you put a 186 head on a 202(hi or lo comp) you won't change the compression at all.

putting a (say) 173 head on to a 202, would the increase in compression be to much for UL/premium UL fuel? what would the (stock) comp. ratio be?

Hi Guys.

If you put a 173 head on a 202, keeping the 202's stock pistons with the small dish, you will end up with a compression ratio of 10:1.

Hey Doc,
What would that equal if you used flat tops with the 173 head ?

Hi 666.

Same as an LJ XU1, 10.3:1.

Hi Dr Terry,
could you answer just one more question?!
What would the comp. ratio end up for a 202 60thou over with flatops and a black efi head, shaved 30 thou off?
