I was just after a few opinions in regards to respraying the engine bay.
1. Do I 2pac or acrylic the engine bay?
2. Do i paint it black or the colour of the car?
Some of my friends have recommended products like por15 to paint the engine bay.
What do you guys think.
also as I am new to all this, do the front panels which are welded remove easily, inner and outer gaurd together for easier painting access?

All depends on whether you plan on original or a hottie. If the latter then i would go for 2pac paint as it's harder and easier to clean.
Re colour, once again if it's original then it should be similar to GM-H chassis black |

It was my dads, he had for over 30 years but it was startiing to fall apart and it wasn't safe for him or the grand kids so we all chiped in and got him something newer. Now I have the car in the garage as no one wanted to see it part. It currently has a 2 pac paint job of deville blue, its factory colour. It has abit of rust on the doors but the 202 is cactus so we all agreed to put a neat 350 chev in. I have pulled the front off but still have the gaurds on. The engine bay is black but probably touched up by a can over the years. Now that the engine is out i think a respray will do it justice. I think the blue will look better in the engine bay but i keep umming and arrring I went to 5 panel beaters in sydney so they could quote me on 2pac for the engine bay but they werent interested even after i told them i had removed all the gear. Thats why i thought should i do it myself in acrylic, and would black be easier. What do you think? Edited by user Friday, 25 March 2011 9:23:20 AM(UTC)

it totally depends on what you are after if you are going the show car look then definetly 2 pac and same colour as car would look alot better easier to keep clean and more durable cost wise may be a little bit more expensive in 2 pac but well worth the effort i just did wifes cousins engine bay in torana in 2 pac came up a treat where abouts in sydney are u i may be able to help you out

I'm in the Liverpool area, but I will get it towed if need be, do you have a workshop?
I too think the 2 pac in the cars color will look the best and although might cost abit more now at least I wont regret it later.

im not to far only in camden no i dont i just do it at home from garage but can also do it from your place as long as you have a garage if you can send me some pics of area you want done to my email i will have a look at it that way then i will give you my number so you can ring cost wise depends on what amount of work is needed and material needed to do job ( [email protected]) i will also send you some before and after shots of engine bay i just done as well

How hard are the inner wheel arch to remove from the engine bay?
So they can be rubbed back and painted separately.
Do the front gaurds need to be removed first?

In my opinion engine bays that are all done the same colour as the car look a little over the top, so to break it up a little, i did my engine bay the same colour as my car, except the inner guards and chassis are done in just a gloss enamel black. I would use 2 pac in the engine bay just because of the shine it gives off the gun, its alot easier then trying to buff acrylic in tight areas.

Personally I prefer 2 pack gloss or satin black. Then my next preference would be body colour only if it is a dark colour. If the body is a light colour, then a dark version of the body colour can look quite good.
For example a light blue metallic car with a dark navy blue engine bay. To be safe, a black will always be fine. There are safe ways to do a resto, and trick looking finishes can sometimes backfire a bit. That's what going out on a limb is all about. |
