Merry Easter to all!!! Quick question for the elctrically gifted. How can I determine the size of auto electrical cable?? I'm getting the wiring rerouted and the fuses etc mounted before I move it all out of the way to spray the engine bay. I'm thinking of upgrading to 100Watt high beam inserts in the future, so I want to make sure the cable is the right size. Hella instructions http://db.hella.com.au/downloads/911-350-89.pdfsay to use 4mm wire and the factory headlamp wiring already looks pretty stout. When I look up cables, I find 4mm cable is only 1.8mm2 cross sectional area and the nominal OD is only 2.6mm!!! http://www.tycab.com.au/automotive-range/single-core.htmlThis seems to be the same as the factory wiring which does measure 2.6mm diameter with my incredibly accurate 8m tape, but of course it's 40 years old, but in good condition. How can I tell what size of the factory wiring is?? Measure?? Count strands?? Test with multimeter?? Any clues?? I am not an electrician,but to me the standard factory loom should be ok to tap into,but use a relay,very important...just what I've done in the past with no problems,same as air horn relays.There really is no reason I can think of to run 4mm wire into a factory(thinner)loom for accessory's...(excluding the obvious like alt,gen,power amp etc.)...RELAY. |

Agree with Jim, just use a relay and run a supply directly from the battery via a fuse. |

The fuse/relay's under control because I've got the fuse and relay in the fusebox from the VN.
The wiring loom from there's from the HG.
Went to supercheap and their 4mm cable's no bigger then what's in the factory loom - if anything it's thinner.
Should all be good.
Now wiring up the fans....

I'd try to run a bigger cross section wire for 100W lamps if I were you. Try to get at least 2.5sqmm flexible per lamp from the relay. It will minimise voltage drop. Make sure there is a good 0V (-ve) bond from the battery to the radiator support too. |

just be carefull with cheap wire, all they do is thicken up the insulation, and there's less wire, have a look at the cut bit to see if there's more insulation than wire! i found this out the hard way a few years ago, i brought a 7m roll because it looked thick enough for what i needed, turned out to be mostly insulation with a few strans of wire inside :-(

You're right Dave
There wasn't much wire in it and it was only rated to 15amps.
The good stuff on the website is also 4mm and rated to 28 amps.
Would have thought there's be an Australian Standard they'd all have to follow!!!
Using an AU wiring loom to wire up the thermos and it's got some seriously thick cable in it let me tell you :)

I read on another Forum (GMH Torana I think) that Saab thermos fit the 3 row Holden radiator better than Ford. I saw it fitted up and there were no mods required other than holes for the mounts in the radiator edge. Fan speed control may be a bit trickier though. |

Stuffed my elbow yesterday putting the bonnet back on, but it's slowly coming good.
Got till Wednesday - sorting a lot of stuff out.
Struggling with washer bottle at the moment.
The rest seems to be coming together though.
