On the chassis rail next to the steering box. Will be repeated on the ADR ID plate if the chassis is original. Will look something like BHQ12345M

Thanks for that HK,
Looking at the original registration paper it says the chassis number is CH96302M, But I see no sign of a number stampped into the chassis rail near the steering box. Even if the chassis had been changed wouldn't there be a number?

should be on the top side of the rail , if it has been painted you may have to use a wire brush to detect wether someone has filled it in with something. A lot of these cars had the chassis changed due to accident or bad cracking and some may have had the old number filled in to hide the fact.

Look on the ADR plate. It is most likely CHQ96302M. May have had a replacement set of rails in the 70's or 80's as Cloudy states.

I've just bought an HQ coupe and its had the rails smoothed. Finding this forum has been a great help. Thanks to those that contribute for making life easier for us newcomers.

Got it Sorted in Qld. Just needed to get the police to inspect the car and fill out paperwork for a surrogate chassis number. Qld Transport then issues a surrogate through the police. Then authorised to stamp the chassis with the new number. Whole thing took less than 48hours. Gotta say the police and Qld Transport were really helpful. The police even came to my place to inspect as the car wasn't registered.

If you were in Victoria there is an engineering place called Kents that is permitted to recreate your original numbers on HQ rails keeping the car factory correct. I don't know how they can do this but that is what I was told.
