I have another VH SLE Commodore with these numbers on stamped on the Lh strut tower:
V1NV02283B165

On the small i.d plate it reads:

8X69RC L597231H

On the other compliance plate it reads:

CVH xxxxxxx

Does this mean that the car is Police stamped or something?

It's a 1983 Vh Commodore.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Edit: The car has under gone a complete respray if that means anything.

Yes, that stamping is a replacement VIN, and this will replace the chassis number for registration purposes.

What you're looking at, according to the small tag, is a June/July 83 VH SL/E sedan that was fitted with a 253 from the factory.
Cheers,

Mick

Thanks commodorenut.
What do the replacement numbers mean?
Was it stolen at some point?
Will I have problems registering it in NSW?
Edit: Just found out what happened from previous owner. The car wasn't stolen. When the car underwent the full bare metal spray, everything was taken back!
The owner had to go to Vic roads and get a replacement number stamped by them. The car was there for half a day getting the once over. Once this was finished, they had it registered.
Thanks again Commodorenut!

It would have had to have no evidence of a chassis number stamped in the body for Vicroads to have needed to issue a replacement VIN, OR something sus happened to the car.

VHs have the chassis number stamped in the radiator support. If it was replaced at some stage (must tail end prangs saw the rad support replaced) then that's one explanation for the number vanishing.

However, around June/July 83 Holden had begun stamping the chassis number into the LH strut tower, like on VKs.

Now it begs the question, has it had a major shunt in the past, and new structural members were fitted - thus losing the original stamps? Or was it because of criminal activity in the past?

I don't see how a full bare metal respray would affect the chassis number - neither position is one that shows externally, and you'd have to be an absolute moron if you got rid of the stampings during a rebuild.
Even repainting the bay doesn't make them vanish - I can show you proof of that - hi-fill & 2-pack colour and mine's still perfect.

Tread with caution, and don't believe stories that sellers spin, particularly when things don't really add up.

If the car has been registered in VIC with that VIN, then make sure you get evidence of it, as you will need to get a blue slip in NSW, and it may come in handy.
Cheers,

Mick
