hi

I have a dead stock XD 5.8 auto and am thinking of changing the original Carter carby for something better. Its idling poorly, auto choke cactus, everything else has been checked and is okay. I want to keep the air cleaner, inlet manifold and keep it looking stock.

Is there a bolt on carby which would give better economy, smoother idling and starting or i am better just getting the original carby rebuilt?

I could recommend getting your original carby overhaulled, as they were a very good carby if tuned correctly.

Yep, if you can, find someone that knows how to service the thermoquad. Not sure about now but once upon a time you could get three types of kits for them. One for towing, one for economey and one for performance. I've got a thermoquad sitting on the shelf and one day hope to get it rebuilt properly and flick the holley I'm using now. Just got to find someone that actually knows thermoquads which isn't as easy at it sounds.

thanks fellas - great advice, especially types of kits ... there's a couple of carby places nearby, so will suss them out.

If you can't find anyone that knows how to rebuild a thermoquad properly and you are forced to go the holley route. For a dead stock 351 I'd be looking at maybe a 600 or 650 double pumper. I'm running a 600 with vac secondaries at the moment and it's not really enough for my motor but mine is just a shade past dead stock.

thanks Paul, is there any difference (ie. one better than the other) between vacuum and mechanical secondaries? I don't want to overcarb, so sounds like the 600/650cfm Holley is the best way if I don't go the rebuild route.

And slightly off-topic ... although I have yet to crawl underneath and check the diff tag, I'm assuming its a 2.77 lsd diff (its an fmx auto). Would there be a discernible difference in acceleration going to a 2.92 ratio or is it a waste of money?

what driving do you do most? highway or city?

being a high diff and auto id be going a vac secondary

I went frm 2.75 to 3.25 in my ZH with 9 inch.
I find it great even sitting on 120km/hr.
I do not think 2.77 to 2.92 you would even notice a difference?

Try a Barry Grant 625 vac sec. You can pick these up super cheap right now as they have gone bust, i find they are easy to tune and give real good economy. They have great air entries and four corner idle. We always pick up a bit of power and fuel economy using this carb.

I have, & a few mates as well have used a Carter AFB carb to great success for stock to mild engines. They are extremely easy to tune & you can get a strip kit for the exact model of carb you have with jets & needles for total custom tuning which is quite easy. These are avaialbe from anyone who sells carbs or on the net.
