HI,

Have a 308 with Supra g/box. I get a bad rattle occasionally when taking off and at low revs going up big hills it started a while ago but is now getting worse. Same hills in a lower gear, or faster speed in 5th does not produce the rattle. Have checked that its not the fan hitting shroud under load. Exhaust is solid. So I am thinking gear box. If it was the thrust bearing it would rattle every time the clutch was out. right? Any thoughts.

i would be checking your engine mounts mate, it sounds like it could be the exhaust hitting the floor or something, it may seem solid but if u have dodgey engine mounts the motor will move alot.

dont forget to check your gear box mount, some times this conversion uses mount that has no wear stops, so if it wears or gets soft the gear box can lift off the crossmember and hit the tunnel, and/or allow the exhaust to foul on the undercarrage.not sure

If it was the thrust bearing, it would make a noise every time u push the pedal "down" and ur gearbox when you let the pedal "up" (engaged).
All of ur posts are correct, if it's pinging'(from bad fuel) the rattle may only b noticable when the engine is w

Don't think its mounts as all three are less than a year old, but will check them out. Hope not main bearing, with recon engine with 15k on the clock. Still under warranty but would need to rule out everything else, so they cann

Worked it out.

It was the fancy nut on the air cleaner hitting the bonnet!
Now what I can't work out is how this noise got worse and worse???

Anyways I can now put the foot down again and take off in high gear without thinking the heart is going
