I'm looking at buying a car in South Australia that is defected. Does anyone know the rules about selling a defected car and how to get the defect off (yes it is a regency defect)

I have done this once before and couldnt get a straight answer out of Services SA or regency. All they told me was that the seller was breaking the law by selling a defected car and that if i wanted to get the defect removed after it was fixed that the original owner will have to do it.

Makes no sense really.

What i want to do is buy the car, transfer it into my name and then put it over regency so i can get the defect off and register it.

Any ideas?

I did this once. Was a pain in the bum.

I bought it, took it to Vic, got a road worthy and got it rego'd. Then bought it back to SA and they did their numbers check. (no inspection) and it was back on SA rego.

But it is possible to do it all here in SA. But technically there is no way of getting it into your name until the defect is off.

It is illegal to sell a defected car unless it is for parts. (wrecking)

The thing is its only defected for a few minor things like lights, tyres etc but because it has to go over regency they would pic it to pieces.

Its cheap and thats why i want to buy it, i was just wondering how to get everything sorted.

Yes the law is designed to stop people getting riped off but this is not the case in this situation.

Idea 1...buy the car ,leave it in his name and get him to take it over the pits for you.(by arrangement before paying)

Idea 2 use it as a parts car.

Idea 3 and the BEST IDEA...As Bob (80569K)said
walk away and find another one...ps what type of car ?..some are worth the trouble!!..jim

one other thing...once it goes over the pits and lets say they pick 10 things wrong with it,if you take it thru the second time before a year is up ,they can only check those 10 things by law...funny but true!
found that out with my WB caprice!

Yes i am up to date with taking cars to regency as i have been defected a few times before by the fun stoppers. I will be making sure the car is going to pass before i take it and yes i know they usually still find things.

Its an 73 HQ tonner, 253 4 speed. body is straight, very minimal rust. the only rust i found was in bottom of the doors.

The motor is reasonbly fresh too.

The owner dont have the time and cant be bothered fixing the defects and taking it to regency as he is under the impression they will pick up a lot more things and it will not pass.

After i had a look i talked it up that yes this would be the case so i could drag the price down but really it needs minimal work and would not cost that much at all.

Price $1200

The bloke initally wanted around $2000, someone offered him $900 and he turned them away. Even know it is defected it is worth $1200 easy. If the bloke could be bothered and got the defect cleared himself and then put three months rego on it it would easily sell for around $2500 - $3000.

I like how people offer thier 2 cents worth without knowing the full story.

PMSL, yep

remember, your not just buying a tonner your getting a headache thrown in too!!!

being lazy is ok, but you need to expect to take a hit in the hip pocket to suit, if he can't be bothered fixing it then he needs to realise he's devalued it by doing so

at the end of the day, it's worth what YOU want to pay!
