hey yall, my vb sle 308 is running like a chaff cutter? i was wondering whether it being electronic ignition, i should change the points/rotor, maybe cap as well, before i do the plugs/leads. they are not that old anyways, thats why i was looking for another cause first. your thoughts mucho appreciated. cheers bcb |

there won't be any points the rotor could be cracked as with the cap but electronic ignition is pretty tough it takes alot to make it go bad. I would check the plugs see what they look like at the tip,and do a continuity/resistance check on the leads. even new parts can be faulty. have a look at the little graphite plug in the centre of the cap it should press back freely on the little spring behind it if its worn or the spring is stuck that can be a problem

I would take the dissy, leads & coil to an auto elec and have them bench tested, if they are ok, I'd look at the wiring from the ignition switch to the coil and dissy.

hey 80569k, it is interesting, because i am sure she fires easier when the solar panels have been charging for a few hours,/and or after a good run? the wires running across the engine to the dissy, are probably a tadd decayed? will renew, thanks heaps bcb |

you have cleaned the carby and fuel filter? testing coils is not always successful because they generally don't play up until hot. which brings us to the point, what exactly happens?

well men, she is breaking down under load, exactly the same as what used to happen with points, when they were cactus. the carby is beyond repair,[quady] and she is dual fuel. the coil is not that old, it sounds like one pot is not with us anymore, yet when she is idling she is reasonably smooth, but i do know there is a sticky valve, but i use moreys to keep things oke dokie. i think when on gas it is skitzso, good one mini, no idle the next. starving for gas i would hazard a guess. maybe the rubber gasket around the air filter bowl is gone? me thinks it needs a good tune, timing wise, for the gas, and then petrol is only for emergencies. fuel filter you say?? no fuel filter on this, mainly on gas, and with the quaddy being not worth doing up, then i thought maybe the rubber sleeve in the gas air filter is not sliding up and down properly? because it would change markably with a new tank of gas. far beyond me i am afraid. cheers bcb |

bear, gas will play up at the very fist sign of a bad spark, long before petrol will
your on the right track, new cap, rotor button, leads and plugs are the first thing to do, even if it's not the problem it'd never make it run worse!!
it sounds like you could have got a bad tank of gas, have you filled up at either safeway or coles at all??? they have the worst gas you can buy, try to avoid them unless you have too
after you service your ignition system go to a a mechanic that services gas (or even better your local gas fitter) they'll be able to tune your gas converter and set your timing

yes gas is very hard on the electrics. as a wild guess try changing say 4 of the plugs at a time, if it improves swap one fewer over till you narrow the field down. or just get insulated pliers and pull off one lead at a time and see which one makes no difference. that will be the dud cylinder. don't get a shock it can be very painful or seriously damaging to your heart if you have a heart condition you don't know about

hey yall, found a rubber hose at back of carby that we had blocked off, for lpg, and because quaddy is cactus, it was loose and leaking air, found one of the probs? it ran heaps betterer, so will keep tidying up blocked off pipes and making good all wires. cheers bcb |

air leaks can cause problems so fixing it will help
a rough guide to tuning the gas converter, is to wind in the mixture screw in (like the carby's have) till the engine runs rough, then wind it out til the engine comes good and keep going til it runs rough again, then set it in the middle, there's alot more to it than that, but that can sometimes help if it's running really bad
gas converters don't last forever either, they do wear out, maybe yours is on it's last legs too???

hey yall, found it!!!! problemo solved! apart from the few probs i had to fault find, the 308 would just suddenly die. i would think i had run out of petrol, get some, jump in and she would start?? well what it was, was the, "coil", it would get hot, then stop working, cool off when i got more juice, and then run again, at least i am hoping the new coil keeps on keeping on. cheers bcb |

mr bear.
assuming the coil is mounted on the engine like most factory deals, get it off there and mount to the gaurd/firewall/etc so it aint soaking all that heat.
mounting electrickery bits on hot places is the stupidest idea ever!
