I want to degree a new cam in properly but ive lost the instructions to my timing chain. Its a 308 motor. I tried just slotting it onto the next key which should be 2 degrees out and then since i couldnt see any other marks on the other side other than the normal dot, or a 0 it mighta been i just lined it back up with that mark as usual. But that moved the cam something like 50 degrees. With it set properly, on the zero key and the chain links lined up between the dots it comes up around 8 degrees advanced which is why im trying to work out how to retard it back. So could anyone tell me how to do it properly ?

Cam degreeing can only be done properly, once true top dead centre is found. You will also need a degree wheel for this exercise. Do a search on the web for either Crowe or Crane cams. Both these sites give instructions (with pics, for people like me) o |
