Was wondering if anyone could tell me the operating temp for a 351 clevo? I have just put a new motor in my Falcon and when driving around the temp gets up to 105 deg. It seems to run up around there untill I stop then slowly drop to 85 deg. Is this ok? Some info about the motor 351 block 30 thou over 2v heads ported f260 crane cam weind manifold 750 dp holley msd ignition 12 deg initial timing 32 total big aussie desert cooler radiator with 2 fans 80 deg thermostat

what water pump are you running? and do you still have the brass bypass ring below the thermostat?

What BIG CAV referred to above is crucial for a Cleveland They need the brass restrictor plate Thermostat is also VERY imporant Many people use the ioncorrect thermostat..... I always use the Dayco DT66A high flow thermostat(with the following numbers on the housing 333-180/82) Please be careful the windsor high flow thermostate is also a Dayco DT66A but has 330-180/82 on the housing. Correct thermostat is on the right. incorrect thermostat in my hand Brass Restrictor plate pictured below - hard to see :(

dayco stock is currently correct, they swapped dt66a to a windsor thermostat but i spoke with them direct and now sell the correct clevo one again as of about a year ago
can also buy the same flowkooler (dayco rembrand them) thermostat as a mildon part from performance places
in regards to your first question a clevo should be operating temp around mid 80's so yes 105 is too hot when operating

just put an edelbrock street pump on made no difference. Had a gmb pump on before. It has got the correct thermostat and bypass plug I have allready checked them. Can u put the head gaskets on the wrong way on a clevo? Have got a near new autometer mechanical gauge am gonna check it tommorow with one of those laser gun things and see if the gauge is wrong. Got me stuffed what is causing it its not boiling so hoping it is the gauge.

yes you can put a clevo head gasket on wrong, they look almost identical except for 2 coolant ports at the top from memory
last time i looked Edelbrock pumps didnt have a coolant bypass port??? so the brass bypass ring is useless, but thats irrelevant as it shouldnt cause heating/cooling issues once the thermostat is open.
have you checked your thermostat opens enough too?
what size thermos do you run? are they in a shroud?
got a anti crush spring on the lower radiator hose?

Yes the thermostat opens all the way and bottom hose has a spring. Radiator, fans and shroud all came together from Aussie desert coolers. Is there anyway to tell if the head gaskets are on the right way without pullin the heads off?

I brought a clevo from a bloke.it had a heating problem that he couldn't fix.I took the heads off and found one gasket around the wrong way,not saying yours is but if nothing else works ,I know its a pain but take them off and check,least then u know yes or no .I built my 351 clevo several times. One time I had it in the car all hooked up.started it and had no oil pressure ,pulled the distributer out and found the oil pump shaft was on the out side of the hole. I kicked my self for a week knowing what I had to do to fix it

I had a look in ford workshop manual and it says 351 Cleveland Thermostat starts to open 86 deg and fully open 100 deg. So if thermostat isn't fully open till 100 deg wouldn't that be normal for the motor to run up around that temp or a little higher cos it's a worked motor?

When u say its gets up to 105 deg is that at 100 klms or around town,my 351 heats up around town but when I get out on the highway it cools down.what compression do u have,that can make it run hot,open chambers of closed .mine is 11.5.when u say it drops when u stop is that when its idling.if temperate is dropping I don't think u have put head gasket around wrong way ,but don't hold me to it.I live in FNQ which dose not help with temperate with the humidity I notice a big difference in summer then winter.I run alloy heads know which has helped but still have problems on a hot day .I have always used a thermostat with the guts cut out,but will try the one that biggav is talking about ,I have used the other one and have had no success ,didn't know I was using the wrong one.

Compression is 11.5 2v closed chamber heads. Motor will idle all day at 180 goes up to 190 then fans come on goes bact to180. Driving around in traffic gets up to 220 Max and usually sits between 200 to210 normal driving or highway but I've got 4.11 diff gears so its revs are up pretty hi on the highway.

Can't remember but it was a different looking impeller to other pumps I have used. Pumps alot of water if u runt it till the thermostat opens and watch the water flow through with the rad cap off

Ok I pulled the heads off gaskets were on the right way. Didn't check comp ratio but should have. Radiator was not put together properly (was only using rip part of radiator). Got that fixed put it all back together still gets hot! I am now going to remove heads again and put chi heads on I think it has to much comp as I cannot stop it pinging.

Hey xacoupe I have CHI 3v alloy heads in my 351 ,had brought cast heads from a machine shop in mackay which after a few years sitting on the floor in the bedroom,n the wife kicked her toes a few times ,got put on n leaked water in to # 7 pot straight up,the bloke at mackay just keeped saying I don't remember u.so I took the valves n springs sent them to CHI he fitted them to the alloys ,had no trouble since.just remember don't use the standard spark plugs they have to b longer ,also u suppose to use 4v extractors,I had 2v extractors,which were new n couldn't aford 4v so I just ported the 2v extractors to match the heads.cost $2800 including manifold,its in an XD got XB bonnet with fluts an modified the shaker to fit the carby under the bonnet.

What radiator are you running? is it 2,3 or 4 core? I would atleast be running a 3 or 4 core and do you know if it's blocked? A good way to check if its blocked is feeling around the radiator when it's hot, front or rear just stay clear of the fans. If you feel any cold spots then your radiator is blocked. Also have you felt your hoses when vehicle is hot? Is the bottom radaitor hose getting hot? Heater hoses hot? if any of them are cold you have got a circulation problem. Also are you running a mechanical fan or are you running thermo fans? I'm running AU twin thermo fans on mine and they work really well. If you are running thermo fans make sure the fans are spinning in the correct direction, if the polarity is reversed then your fans will be fighting with the air flow and it will overheat!
