Hey all, just after some info on lash adjusters in a VL 6 cylinder.
(I know, Jap motor). Are these common for making a ticking noise and what are they roughly worth each and how is there availability from parts stores. Any info would be great.

I bought a VL a few years back. The inside of the engine looked as if the car had never benefitted from an oil change. The sludge was 1cm thick on the inside of the rocker cover.

So I decided that I'd scrape the rocker cover clean, change the oil, run it for a few minutes, add 1/2 a litre of kero to the oil, run it some more and then change the oil & filter.

Turned out to be a bit of a mistake as the newly loosened up crud ended up in the lifters which made them a little noisey to say the least.

I then found out that the VL's lifters are fairly easy to remove, dissasemble, soak in kero and clean out with a pin. The lifters were good as new after that.

So to answer your question the VL RB30 engine runs non adjustable hydraulic lifters ( I believe that it might be the first OHC engine to do so) which can be replaced or as I have found serviced.

As jim said you can try some sort of flush, it will either fix it or F**K it, the lifter will me a noise for three reason, 1 incorrect preload either shim or valve installed height issue most dont rum shims now, 2 no oil flow to the lifters junk in the rocker shafts and arms also junk in the lifter passgae itself, 3 the lifter is stuffed. i had a ford courier g6 motor apart recently the head had been done up 6-12 months earlier we did the bottom end up reused the head and now had a lifter noise which was not there befor we started, we replaced the lifter as they were $3.10 each still had a noise turned out all the rocker shafts and arm were full of hard oil, i had to use a small drill bit to clear the rocker arms out, no more noise. some times a flush can help sometimes it breaks all the stuff up and it blocks the oil pick up.
