At the moment my wifes corolla will flog it off the lights.

How close to Hume do you live? Might pay to visit them for some fine tuning. When Hume do the carbies, they bolt them onto a 350 to adjust. Sometimes the carby is set a little rich and they say to bring it in on the car and they will adjust. My feelings are the carby is running rich. Pull a plug out and see if it is too rich.

A std single exhaust that HJ came out with just kills 308's all over.
Go twin pipes. points are fine but make sure that your vacuum advance is working it's only real purpose is fuel economy, on a highway with it not working = 16 MPG and working = 22 MPG on my old 308.
There are a few tricks to jetting carbys and to lean is not one.
As long as the engine is fine all should be fine but you may have a high ratio diff and it will not be that fast off the line and T400 kill power.

I bought a slightly increased stall torque converter for my L31 M41 GU7 HJ Premier to attempt to overcome the doughy bottom end with the 2.78 diff. Not sure yet if i'll put extractors on it, but i'm replacing the original single system with a 2.5" single and Lukey muffler.
I'm also replacing the original dizzy with a HEI one, and removing the 600 Holley to refit the original (rebuilt) Quadrajet. All of this should help to waken it up a little.

I am about to put a 253 in my ute in the next few weeks. What milage do you think I should expect?

I am going to be running extracters with a 350 Holley. Other then that, all is stock. Unsure if I am going duel or single exhaust yet!

Auto - manual, diff ratio, are you a lead foot, motor work. All factors in to the end result....

2.78 diff is th problem byron. good economical diff over 120klm/hr but useless under that. 3.08 ratio would make a decent difference to both power & ecomomy

Use a timing light or to see if the vacuum canister is working put the vac hose on one of the manifold pipes that you can feel is sucking at idle pop it on and you will hear the engine rev's go up a bit and pop it of and rev's will drop.
A lot of these canisters are buggered now days and it pays to clean up the old dizzy make sure the springs are ok and that it is greased where slides to advance.
