The oil in the VR trans is a bit brown so I was going to change it, but dealers want $200-$400 to do the change. I was thinking that is a bit stiff for an oil change and want to see if I can do it myself. I was thinking that if I disconnect one of the oil lines to the radiator cooler and run the engine the oil will pump out of the trans and can be topped from the top, until the oil runs clean. will this work? Also I was told that if the box is slipping a bit and the oil is changed it can make it actually run worse because the new oil is more slippery than the old oil and makes the trans slip. Is this likely?

If the auto oil is brown it's most likely on it's way out. The slippery is rubbish. If ya want just pull off the pan and put a new strainer on and top it up and as you say disconnect the pipe to but if the auto is a bit sluggish just leave it alone.

i got a service kit for coventrys recently (now called COVS) for $33. it was the genuine AC delco service kit too, not like the rubbish for $23 on Ebay.
take the pan off and change the oil filter and gasket. simple. leave the rear two bolts loose in the back of the pan and lower the front of the pan down so the oil doesn't spill everywhere.
blow your trans lines out with air. you can do it the way you suggest, but be wary, those pumps are powerful and will pump the pan dry in no time. |

i changed my vp auto once and yes that happened with the new oil i noticed an ever slight slipp between gears, flushing that way would be mess and i doubt you would be able to get enough oil back down the stick in time unless you did it in 10-15 sec intervells, ask around for a flush and service at a indepentent transmission shop, but remeber you will use 20lts of auto oil, i used to do it on the cabs then drop the pan and change the filter, if you do it at home when you remove the filter the grommet will stay in the pump carefull tap a screw drive down the side to get it out and put the new one in with a socket and hammer other wise the new filter can fall out and suck air.
