The current rules were instigated due to the 4 younge people killed in an accident a Byron Bay.

These new laws were a kne jerk reaction to be seen to be doing something. These 4 were killed ina 6 cylinder Commodore late at night. Hence the ban on passengers late at night.

Interestingly we do not have consistant P plate laws.

Befor ethe introduction QLD did not display P plates, L plates were a few years before. There is no speed restriction on L and P plate drivers, ie they can sit on 110km/h in a 110km/h zone.

If they were serious they would find out if QLD P platers were more likely to be in accident because they are not restricted to 80km/h in their first year.

You will find there is not and that is why QLD did not change the rules, however NSW did not come in line.

We have a problem here on the Gold Caost, I was told, when my daughter got her Ps, that when in NSW she would be restricted to 80km/h on red Ps. Also we can display P plates on the inside of the window, outside only in NSW.

I rang Tweed Heads Police to confirm. Interestingly they did not know if a QLD P plater was restricted to 80km/h whilst driving in NSW and they said they would book her if the P plate was on the inside of the window. When I asked why, the officer told me they could not see it on the inside. I responded with "so that is why your rego lable is on the outside" she responded with "no its on the inside" I responded with "so how do you see it?". Silence on the other end.

The fact is P plates are a licence condition, not a road rule. So by rights a WA P plater could drive a V8 in NSW but a NSW P plater could not drive a V8 in WA. The same with how the plates are displayed and any speed restictions placed upon them.

The Twed Heads officer confirmed that my son, who was on his Provisional licence at the time, but did not have to display P plates, as he got his before the laws came in, would not be booked in NSW for not displaying P plates.

(Maybe the whole problem is QLD drivers are better than NSW and Victorian drivers, and WA the best of the lot)

Warren

Gotta say that last bit isn't quite right Warren, I think over here in WA we have the worst drivers in the whole country.

I've gotta agree with that. After spending a week in Perth recently, I found a whole heap of WA drivers seems to have no clue of what to do at a roundabout, nor how to merge 1 for 1 in a "zipper" lane merge.

After talking to a fellow I know who's lived there for the last 40 years, we came to the conclusion it's probably because of the high proportion of migrants from NZ, South Africa & the UK. NZ had (just changed) weird laws with roundabouts & giving way at intersections, South Africa basically have no laws, and the UK seem to produce drivers who can only do 15mph down a narrow lane.
Cheers,

Mick
