I put some family photos up on Facebook of our family car which was a Tontala back in the 50's. Look at my avatar photo for one of them, I can put some more up if you like.
I fell out of our British Racing Green Tontala when dad was turning from Mt Alexander road Moonee Ponds to get to Racecourse road, there was some body flex as we crossed a cobble stone dip in the road.
Mum and Dad had a successful photography studio in the middle of Footscray from the early 1950's till the mid 1970s. They'd gone to the Melb Motor Show in the mid 50's, saw the Tontala and bought it on the spot! I remember dad telling me that the Tontala didn't like going less than 65 mph, he'd wind it out on roads to our weekend homes, mainly when mum wasn't in the car! The car had a faulty starter motor and dad dropped it at the auto elec's to be fixed. When he returned to collect the Tontala the car wasn't in the workshop. Dad asked the apprentice where it was, the kid said his boss was test driving the starter motor!!! It came backbehind a tow truck!!! The sparky had t-boned a big old Bedford tip truck!! He pointed at a sign in the workshop that said...�ll care but no responsibility!!"
