They did the same thing here in SA at the start of the year.
Have to be carefull to make sure you pay the sucker when the bill comes in. I know a couple of people that have been done driving unregistered because they forgot or misplaced the renewal.

One downside of not having a rego sticker is the draconian laws we have here in NSW.
The penalty for driving an unregistered car can be well over $1,000 depending on which side of the bed the nice policeman got out of that morning. There are offences of not only being out of rego, but also not having current 3rd party insurance. To boot, the driver gets charged with driving the unreg car & the owner also gets booked for not registering the car.
What I'm getting at is that how does the driver of the car know it's out of rego if he is not the owner & there is no sticker.

Seems to me it just makes basic information harder to find. I suppose if rego is paid over the net there is no evidence of the rego being paid on a label now anyway. Perhaps they should get rid of number plates as well. Replace them with barcodes.......

But surely the RTA would still be sending out a reminder notice that it is due,if the person forgets to pay it then that is their problem.

here in s.a you get your renewal papers 1 month before it runs out then you get another reminder that it is an offence to drive an unregistered vehicle 1 or 2 months after your registration expires... also now most red light cameras have number plate recognition so even if the cops dont get you the cameras will so if its not designed to raise revenue i dont know what is... We have not had rego stickers in WA for a couple of years now and it is difficult to manage, particularly with multiple vehicles in the shed. I read just recently that WA Transport are introducing an email and SMS reminder service becuase of a customer backlash. They will not re-intoduce the labels though.
I would pay an extra $10 or whatever to get a label, my memory is not what it used to be (it was never good anyway), I am bound to stuff up sooner or later.
There is a potential upside to the rego recognition software however, a person could have several similar cars with only one regestered and use the plates on all. Because the cops rely on the software, and the software only knows that the plate is valid (not what colour or model car it is on) there may be scope for a saving! I guess it would all go to s*** if you were involved in an accident though.

I pay mine when I get a reminder. Haven't put a label on the EH for about 10 years. Only once I got asked about it, and I just said I had just got a new windscreen. The rego was current so the label didn't matter so much.
In my opinion labels suck. If we have a label it should be that the car is insured. |

revenue raiser thats all it is .what happens when you work for a company with multipule cars boss says jump in drop this off .employee says is the car registered boss says dont know jan in the office sorts that out.but shes on one month leave hang on we will ring rta & find out if its registered 1hour on phone waiting for an operator from india which wont answer your question because you dont know jans pets name or her mother maiden name.production plus wonder why the country is going backwards because one of the over payed ministers in government said hey if we scrap labels we will save 10 million dollars a year and make that much back from the dumb tax payers that dont notice them being expired thanks miss gillard keep up the good work Edited by user Saturday, 26 May 2012 7:28:43 AM(UTC)

The label on the car does not mean it is paid. So if you get in the bosses car and it has a label, it still does not mean it is paid. |

I have a good idea. They should print a sticker with the date your rego runs out. You could stick it on your windscreen and then you would know when time to pay was up......

What I found funny was that WA canned the rego stickers but after you paid your rego you still get the receipt in the mail but now with a "report a crash" full colour double sided folded piece of card to put in your glovebox in case you come across a crash. Surely these would cost double what it use to cost them for the rego stickers...

thats their way of saying we are not wrong about the sticker.there has been a case in victoria of sa tourists being pulled over by police and their car & caravan been impounded because of the sticker not being on the windscreen .had a mate in nt what they done they would stick the sticker on a piece of glass or clear plasic.they threw this on the dash when they drove their car cops knew to look for cars with bright white teeth and no rego stickers this meant a stolen car Edited by user Saturday, 26 May 2012 10:36:31 AM(UTC)

This whole thing about States all having differing laws and regulation is simply bulls--t. It's the same thing with Trade licensing between the states. I've copped a fine for Electrical wiring work done in Qld and my License is only valid in NSW. Hello we all work under AS/NZ 3000 Wiring rules. Yet we hear the Mining industry has rules to it's own, taking on Indian and other ethnic workers straight off the boat and no real checking if their wiring standard is acceptable. Man this country is going down in a big way.

It goes to prove yet again that Australia is not & never has been one country. It has always been 6 separate colonies, all with there own little separate inefficient governments & one big, even less efficient government overseeing those. If you go to the UK (& I'm not saying that they're much better) you will see what are effectively 3 or 4 separate countries (England, Scotland, Wales & maybe Nth Ireland) all sharing the same laws, police force, roads authority, education system & health system, leaving Westminster to handle their federal issues. Here we have different laws for each state, each with their own separate police force, RTA, education system & education system & the whole lot duplicated at federal level. We are the most over-governed country in the world, even sillier when you think that the population is only 23 million. This whole sticker thing is only another revenue raising scam. Dr Terry |

I read another article somewhere that said the saving was $575,000 per year. That's right - just over half a million dollars.
Surely there's many other, MUCH larger areas of govt expenditure where savings could be made. They could start with the NSW State Parliament, and then cut half of the useless twits out of Canberra too.
I've been in the situation twice in the last 4 years where the rego label has saved my bacon. I drive a company car, so the rego papers don't come to me. I've had to chase the fleet company who "forgot" to pay the rego on both those occasions. Without that label, I wouldn't have known when it was due.
Another stupid NSW RTA/RMS idea was bumping ou,t from 3 to 5 years, the age of the car before it needa an annual inspection. I've seen 3-4 year old cars with over 200,000km on them, absolutely trashed, that would never pass a pink slip, but they simply pay their rego & keep on driving.
Just proves there's no logic at all in our govt departments. |
Cheers,

I agree with commodore nut on the 5 year inspection thing. We have just traded our 4 year old Prado in with 160000km on it. I felt it was going to worthless at 5 years old with 200000km on it, yet its never had a rego check. This is a family car that my wife also uses for her photography business. Keep the stickers I reckon. They won't improve anything at all by getting rid of them.
