My assumption would be the helmet would need to be dated & comply with regulations set out by CAMS & the track scruitineers. That info should be readily available.
Good but cheap helmet?
(Should read: Good & cost effective)
What price do you put on your head?

CAMS publishes a helmet guide which quotes the Standard you have to have. It needs to have an Australian Standards sticker on it. I just looked around at the bike shops. They seemed to have the best ranges. I think I paid about $200 for mine.

try mcmart on Parramatta Rd. huge range of bike gear and good prices. Don't pull the standards sticker off or your helmet is worthless.

Most places will accept an AS rated helmet (as most motorcycle ones are).
There's a number of discount m/c accessory shops that sell them, and you can get a quite reasonable one for $200.

People will say "what price is your head" but a helmet designed to protect you from a direct impact with the road, when on a m/cycle, has a much easier job in the safer confines of a vehicle.

Also now would be a good time to buy. During the winter season bikes and bike gear is reduced by heaps due to the lack of interested riders due to the cold weather. And as BigCav said, buy last years model if you can. I remember buying a Joe Rocket jacket retailing for 5 to 6 hundred bucks for $150.
