the valve stems seals on the Fairmount need replacing according to my mechanic, is this costly? does the head need to be pulled off the engine?

If you are talking about your EB then it's common practice to do them while the head is off but they can be done with the head still on.

The seals themselves should not cost you more than about $20 the whole set.

well, the mechanic changed the oil to a different grade in the EB and at the moment no more smoke,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, fingers crosses for a long fix
