OK guys its time for a new quiz. Again no prizes, just the fun of answering.
What came first to Holden, the automatic choke or the all-synchro manual gearbox.
When did the first intermittent w/wipers appear in a Holden. i.e. what series & what date.

First auto choke?
Is it HR 186S with WW stromberg as didnt some early 186S's have the twin stromberb carbies still.
Synchro box?
Would it be opel 4 speed in HR

Oily I now reckon you are probably correct re the gearbox - I completely forgot about the Opel.
So if that is correct, then I think it will be both Choke and Gearbox are HR but one must have been introduced part way thru the model.
The Intermittents I was pretty sure a mate of mine had a HJ with them so ??? I guess I must be mistaken

OK, 186S & Opel 4-sp are correct but which came first ?
It's a bit of a trick question because they shared the same press release on the same day. The fact is though that the 4-sp went down the production line a few weeks earlier that the 186S. So the correct answer is they got an all-synchro box before they got an auto choke.
The first intermittent w/wipers were seen in HJ, but it was late HJ in Jan 1976, not 1974 as mentioned.
That's what I meant when I said Oily's answer wasn't 'exactly' correct.

Terry, was CD4 - intermittent wipers delayed? 10/74 HJ ordering procedure lists it as an available option but it says afterwards (available mid 1975). However it doesn't appear in an ordering procedure that I have a copy of until 1/3/76 when the HJ "quick-spec" ordering procedure was issued, and at this time it became mandatory in certain models and also certain drivelines and options. However there was a revision to the HJ ordering prcedure on 31/5/75, although the sheets listed as amendments I don't think have any reference to CD4 (they are not there in the 3/76 revision anyway). |

Yes, apparently the intermittent wiper were delayed (Is that meant to be a pun ?). The only literature I have is a Feb 76 Service Bulletin saying "Intermittent wipers were put into production in Jan 76 as option CD4".
The earliest car that I've seen them factory-fiited to was a friend's father's fully loaded HJ Prem wagon that he purchased new in 76 with compliance date of Feb 76.

I was thinking about the Gemini, because they had provision for dwell wipers early on but the first one I've seen fitted was a TD. I checked the TX sales brochures etc. but no mention of dwell wipers.

When I was a kid we had an old FC that had intermitent wipers!(pun)
and also we clocked up many miles as teenagers with the pedal flat to the floor in an old customline.
when it rained heavy and you slowed down the wipers would speed up allowing us to go faster, when accelerating they would slow so you had to slow down.
The ultimate feed back loop and cruise control or speed limiter.
