Hi Everyone,

Just wondering your thoughts on Shannons.

I have my ute and my house & contents insured through Shannons. I have heard a couple of horror stories of late and am thinking of calling to withdraw my insurance.

I have heard of one person having the vehicle stolen from their driveway but due to not having it in the garage after 9pm at night, they would not pay it out.

Another one is of a a car being written off and insured for 24K. Shannons would only pay $15K due to the paint job not being up to scratch.

Hoping that the chinese whispers have it wrong, but thought I would put the feelers out there.

If its true what I am hearing, I am getting out as I expect to get back everything that is agreed insurance value.

Personally my opinion from my many dealings with Shannons from owner, claimer and repairer sides of things.

They are dearer.

If you be honest from the start, they are the easiest to deal with at any later time.

For example. You tell them your roof is hail damage, your paint is faded, your car is used for weddings, your car is parked at another address sometimes, your car does not have an immobiliser etc.

Claim time is easy. They see the note on your policy, and allow your car to start being repaired instantly.

And you keep your car. The one written off that was insured for 24K. If the owner was paid $15K, and keep the car that is much better than new cars where they take the car. I am sure the owner of the Shannons insured car could use the engine and interior to build another car.

So 'Disclosure' is the word here. Tell them everything the aught to know before, and they WILL pay. I have seen done by Shannons many times.

Thanks Peter.

I believe in being honest and although I have never made a claim, I worry.

As far as I know, I have answered everything correctly.

Although the guy would of got to keep the car, I still would ensure that I get the agreed value of the vehicle too.

One of my mates has all of his vehicles insured with Shannons (as do I).

His brother dropped his 1973 Norton Commando & they paid up to get it fixed without any hesitation. Luckily he had added his bro to the policy a couple of days before said stack.

No one normally drives my ute, but I thought all policies had the coverage of any driver as long as they were licenced and that they were 30 years old or above.

I am going to check my policy, but thanks for the feedback guys.

If ever I have to make a claim (hopefully not) I will let you all know of my experiences.

I think that is very true for cars but for bikes my mate tells me its a bit different especially when the bikes are worth $18,000+ each.

They are being very weird about my trail bike though. It's an absolutely immaculate 2001 (MY02) Yamaha XT225 with only 6,800km which won't see a great deal of road use but I want it insured as it will see unsealed road use and occasional road use. Then there is the theft risk to worry about.

A few months ago I asked them about insurance "no way if it's mainly for dirt bugger off" two weeks ago I asked again "yes no worries it will be fully comp covered except when you are off gazetted roads ie on a forest trail" Fair enough.

So they sent me a quote with the value of the bargain basement purchase price of $2,500 which is under the market value So I took it to their Canbera office today to get it inspected and the agreed value changed. Their office is closed today so that's a no go.

So I rang them and asked if they could change the agreed value "no way because we are in a position to restore your financial interest to what it was before you bought the bike so that you can go get another one"

This is total crap as
A:/ I probably won't find one as good as this for that sort of money

B:/ if it were written off by an act of my fault or stolen then I would get $1950 back after their excess which makes a mockery of their "restore your financial interest" statement.

Needless to say they won't be getting more of my money today.

Yeah, I have to agree with you Jim as I don't understand them either. I think it depends who you talk to on the day.

When I first got my ute insured, I phoned them up a week before I picked it up. They told me the insured value for a HQ Kingswood ute at just under $3K, unless I could forward pictures. I had them log into my ebay account as this is where I bought the ute from and thought it was the easiest and quickest option. When they logged in and saw all photo's including the stages of the respray, they straight away insured it for $6K.

As I have added new things (GTS rims etc) I call them up to increase the value. Depends who I talk to if I was to have it increased or not. Some days it gets increased and other times it doesn't. At the moment it is insured just under $8K. After I have it resprayed and all the bits I want added to it, I plan to get it inspected and insured for more. Will see how I go.

Thanks: 2 times
I have my 2 cars and household contents with Shannons, never a prob. One thing I have noticed is that the insured value for the HK goes UP every year as opposed to my VX which goes DOWN every year, if I keep the VX long enough it's sure to rise in value, lol.

I just bought a 1964 Buick and had it added to my other insurances. No worries at all. Now that I have the Buick, I have to park my HQ out side in the driveway. I requested for Shannons to change the policy to read that it is parked in the driveway rather then the garage.

They said to me there was no need as it wouldn't change the premium and it is still insured regardless. For piece of mind, I had them change it on the policy anyway and had them post it to me.

80569K, my HQ is going up each year now too.
