Was the HG Brougham ever released as a 6 cylinder version ? As a teenager I recall seeing a HG Brougham Taxi with a 186. I know it may not of been standard from GMH but could it have been ordered as a special fleet order or through the dealership? I guess this leads to could any variation especially in the 60s and 70s been ordered or produced ie HG Brougham as a 161 3 speed column shift (poverty pack)

Not in Australia AFAIK. There was very rarely a delete engine option in Statesman, Holden or Torana. If it existed it'd most likely have been built after GMH built it. As an example I remember when the 4spd auto was release I think in AU Falcon. Most of the local taxis pulled to 4spd out and retrofitted a BW35 as the BW35 was only about $300 exchange for a rebuilt box, and they changed boxed at least once a year. The 4spd cost 4 or 5 times that much to overhaul. So it might have been done that way. It wouldn't have been hard to do, just buy a secondhand HG 6cyl trimatic Belmont or Kingswood and swap the engine, box and associated stuff over.

In very early HQ you could get a 202 3spd HQ Statesman but the base engine became a 253 not too long after release.

Apparantly 81569 HG models were produced (ie 6cyl Brougham) for overseas RHD markets. I know there are 6cyl 4spd Statesmans in HJ built for the Asian market. Perhaps the 6cyl Brougham in question was one that never left eg evaluation internal car sold off within Australia, and ended up as a cab?

Thanks for that So your saying there was a South African Export version of a 6 cyl HG Brougham, is there any literature or photos available on these models? Cheers Mick

Not South African, those got a Chev 6yl and were assembled there and called I think a Constantia. It'll be for the Asian market, probably Thailand or Malaysia. It won't have been a Brougham as we know it though, it'll have been a much lower spec car, much like the HQ Statesman Custom.
