Hey Guys, please don't laugh at my misfortune but at Easter we had a party and I put garbage in the boot of the car,,, yep, you guessed it! I sorta forgot to do the run to the tip the next day and some crap dribbled out on the boot carpet. I scrubbed the carpet, and for days I left the boot and all doors open, and yep, it still stinks like poo, its like driving a garbage truck, and I'm becoming very unpopular on family outings, what is the best air freshener to put in it? I used one of those Ambi pur fans but that's no good,,, Ideas anyone?

I feel for you.

A few years back someone put those foam plastic tubs in the back of one of our work Kia Carnivals.

The tubs were full of squid and one of them leaked squid juice.

We tried everything to get the smell out including paying professional detailers but nothing worked.

In the end I stripped the interior completely, scrubbed the metal with soapy water, hosed it all out and put carpet from a wrecker into it (new carpet was worth $700!).

As the carpet from the wreckers looked like it had been used to store engines on we washed the original carpet & hung it up in the roof space of a garage for two years and put it back in when we sold the "Squid mobile".

We never fully removed the bad smell.

So yes remove your boot carpet and wash it as well as washing the inside of your boot as some of the smell has probably embedded in the metal.

Take the carpet out, and gerni it on the driveway. Yes, use the gerni. Also, once you've done phase 1 with the gerni, move onto phase 2 - scrub a 50/50 mix of diesel & kero into the carpet, and gerni it out again. Phase 3 gets rid of the odour from phase 2: scrub washing powder into it, and gerni it again.

You'll be surprised how much cleaner & fresher the carpet will be - it will also get rid of a lot of what you can't remove by scrubbing alone. I've done this to wrecking yard carpets that were covered in crusty old wheel bearing grease & trans oil, and they come up like new, with no 'hangover' smell.
Cheers,

Mick

If you don't want to use diesel try something like biozet or omo, any washing powder with enzymes in it. Mix a cap into a bucket of warm water then pour it onto the carpet ( out of the car of course ) and give it a scrub. Then hose or gernie the hell out of it. If the smell is still inside the car wipe some vanilla essence over the metal and put a bowl in the boot with baking powder in it. The baking powder will help absorb any residule smell, moisture. Just remember to take it out before driving anywhere.

my sister thought it was a smart idea to put a brown snake skin she found in her yard thinking my kids would want it in the boot of my Statesman. Well I forgot all about it,until about 2 weeks later I opened the boot and the smell of death knocked me on my arse. I was wild but my MIssus suggested using oak wood balls they are in a bag and used to hang in cloths cupboards to absorb smells. I put them in there and left them there for about 6 months with the boot shut while the car sat/stored and the next time the boot was opened the smell was gone but with garbage I think I would definitely be cleaning the carpet with strongest of fragmented products and then try the balls
