Gday to all

Have found a HZ ute that is very strange and the owner said he ordered it as is, premier front end, full trim interior to floor, 253hc, 4 speed, 3.08 diff, gts dash, bucket seats, full centre console, cover over steering coupling, gravel protector at the front, heavy duty springs, rubber flaps in front of the rear shocks, sway bar on the rear end, has not been registered for 16 years. What is this ute.

Any help will be appreciated. I don't know if to custom or go original ??.

It doesn't sound that 'strange' at all, it sounds like a nice car.

Sway bar is standard on all HZs. The cover over the steering coupling was standard on all HX & HZ.

Utes had quite heavy springs as standard, but the XW5 country pack had heavier duty springs.. The gravel protector & rubber flaps are also part of XW5.

253 V8, 4-sp trans, bucket seats & sports instruments are all common options, especially for Kingswoods.

The 3.08 diff is a bit unusual, 3.55 was standard for the 253/4-sp combo, but maybe that is also part of XW5.

The only non-factory item would be the Premier front. this was most likely dealer-fitted or perhaps a conversion carried out by the then owner.

What is meant by 'full trim interior to floor' ?

HZ Kingswood ute. Except for the Premier nose all of those are standard or optional on HZ Kingswood ute. Premier nose is dealer fitment if there from new as Ambulance package was on HZ van and cab chassis only (Premier nose is part of the ambulance package). Are you sure it is a Kingswood ute and not.a Holden ute? If it is a Holden ute it may be a Sandman with buckets, console shift, 4spd, Quad headlight nose and U17 instruments. All this was optional on a Holden ute too in HZ.

Edit, Dr Terry beat me to it! I forgot to comment on the 3.08 diff, very rare behind HZ 253 manual. Early ones are 3.55 std, later seem to mostly be 3.36

It'll be an XW5 "Outback Equipment Package" as Terry says. These got:

Component optiopns:
F72 Gross Load Equipment (basiclaly 1-tonner leaf springs)(70, 80 body styles only)
K45 Heavy Duty air cleaner (6cyl only)
D71 Rear Mudflaps
T57 Front Mud Flaps (basically the only cars to get factory fitted mudflaps)

Feature changes:
Engine splash pan
Rear shock absorber stone shields (60, 70 and 80 body styles only)
Rear lower control arm rear mounting bracket re-inforcement (35, 69 body styles only)

All HQ-HZ utes in good condition are sought after. If it is a restoration case then no different in value to any other non-Sandman ute. You can't really tell what is assembly plant and what isn't, although Premier front isn't.

...just a little note on the premier fronts one the last of the HZ commercials.....

...we had a HZ one tonner in at the panel shop in the early '80's and were commenting on the non-original premier front whereby the owner said he'd had it from new, and the factory was ''running out'' any surplus panels and assemblies to make way for the incoming WB ???.......

...any thoughts on that scenario ?

HZ Ambulance pack 1-tonner. These cam standard with a Premier nose, and door trims. There wouldn't be bulk surplus stuff as such. Vehicles were built to a rolling schedule which looked forward for a fair time period, and all the parts required to assemble each car on the schedule were ordered and sourced. There wasn't a big store of bits at each assembly plant that were just taken to build cars as required.

Thankyou for your information

I think now I will just get it on the road and registered for the least amount possible so as not to over capitalise. It is a sweet looking ute with just a lot of surface rust no major cancers any where.
Will try to get a picks up for you when I learn how.

Thanks again
Paul.

WB p van ambo or cab chassis ambo, did they get the 308 or only the 4.2L.

Did the WB GTS dash get the HZ GTS steering wheel.

A mate said to me his WB cab chassis he bought new came with statesman deville front and GTS dash, but only a 4.2L V8 4sp.

It wasn't easy to get a 5.0L in a WB commercial, it wasn't a regular option. I've seen only one, a 1984 yellow cab chassis, L31 M40 column auto. Dr Terry has come across at least one ute too I believe. It'd be a bit like a 350 TH400 in a HQ ute, a few were made.
There was a U17 instruments option in WB, and there was also an NK3 sports steering wheel, but not an actual HZ GTS wheel as these were all black on GTS. In WB they were available in dark blue and dark buckskin. HZ optional sports wheel outside of GTS were black, dark buckskin and dark carmine. Getting the U17 instruments didn't automatically get you the NK3 wheel - same deal as HZ.

I doubt a WB cab chassis would have been assembly plant fitted with a Deville front, that would probably be dealer fitment. Sports dash definitely possible. THere was a WB B06 Ambulance package but it appears to get the standard WB square headlight commercial nose.

G'day to all
I just changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter(will test run out of a jerry can though)
changed any broken hoses( vacuum and fuel) have holley 350 rebuild kit on standby new spark plugs,
2 new spark leads, will turn over without spark plugs to build oil pressure and then put them in and hope for the best.
Put a battery in yesterday and all ignition and lighting working. And steam cleaned entire engine bay and underneath. I found a blanking plate inside the car and I think it may be a blank for the stereo in the GTS dash (Are these actually a part ??).
Still trying to learn how to do pictures on here.
Will keep you posted
Cheers

I had one dude Luke that worked with us in Darwin in 1986 had a 1 tonne 308 auto on the tree, think it was a HJ with premier front std dash and wheel said it was a ex ambo.

I have Seen a tan looking sports steering wheel HZ GTS type look some where a UC torana i think. is that called carmine ?

Mate with the WB had a aftermarket steering wheel on it.

Yes, B06 option on HJ, this was available on HJ-HZ. Only available in M41 with L31 but could also be had in other drivelines. Also came with Premier front, doortrims and armrests. U17 dash, bucket seats and A/C were other options i've seen. I've had two, both HZ's. One white L32 M40 column auto with U17 dash, buckets and A/C. And the Overlander which was an Ultra Blue L31 M41, column auto with buckets and U17 dash. A friend had one new, it was Panama green L32 M20 with buckets. I've only ever seen one HJ before, in L31 M41. B06 was the only way to get L31 in a tonner. I've never knowingly seen a panel van B06 but I do know a guy that bought one new, I guess it is because they don't stand out like the tonners do.

UC's had more colours in the sports wheels, they got: black, dark grey, dark blue, dark green, tan, dark buckskin and dark carmine. Dark Carmine is red.

G'day all
Fuel pump not working, tipped fuel down carbie lots of times?? Then she fired and blew all the rats nests and rust out of the exhausts. wow. after she unblocked the exhaust she ran. Took carbie off and rebuilt. Took fuel pump of and cleaned it all ok.
Will give another test run sometime this week.

Any idea on that blanking plate that I found for gts dash???
Also forgot to mention the ute had white rims on it that kind of look like sunrasia rim ??.
Cheers

Remember that it's not a 'GTS' dash it's the 'U17 sports instrument option', which was a normally available option for most models in the range. A radio wasn't fitted as standard to models lower a Kingswood SL in the HZ series, so a blanking plate for the radio hole would be factory standard for that car.

What would be rare, would be factory radio delete blanking panel for something like a Premier in timber-tone.

G'day Dr Terry

Thankyou for that information I will try to call it the sports dash for now on, it makes sense.
I pulled the carby apart and very bad inside and gasket stuck like anything.

As I detail trucks I have tried something, I have submerged each piece of the carby in a solution for 2 hours and it has cleaned it up like brand new. Non Caustic.
Cheers
Paul.

them overlander cab chassis must of been BO6 but came out with kingswood nose. and only came in 5.0L with T400.
