G'day all,

Ive got a BA XR8 Mk1 with premium sound, I was reading about some cars being fitted with factory sat nav.

I have found the small compartment in the boot under the parcel shelf and next to the factory sub on the r/h side.

I never even knew it existed!

I think it would be a neat upgrade, can you still get these from ford? I know you needed premium sound which I have so that's a start.

I have found next to no information about this anywhere!

Any help would be great!

Cheers.

Hello Mal,
I have explored this option myself as I have a BA Fairmont Ghia.

Being a Ghia it has the 6 stack CD player and being a BA 6 stacker it does not work.

So I get myself a brand spanking new SatNav DVD thinking that I could replace the CD player with it.

Then I found out that it goes under the parcel shelf & to fit it I would need the antenna which is also under the parcel shelf, the remote (no big deal there) & the wiring harness from the dash to the back of the car out of a SatNave equipeed BA as there is no wiring to connect the DVD unit to.

I decided that you could buy a better aftermarked SatNav for about $100 so it was not worth the effort. I simply bought a bezel and installed a stereo that can play iPod music to get around the stuffed stacker.

PS, anyone want to buy a SatNav DVD unit?

Hey Jim,

Ive got the 6 stacker too, Ive never had a problem with it!

Id like to get one of these factory units complete, but I am now thinking I would be cringing at the price....

Do you know what brand the factory units were or any further information, Ive contacted Ford here in Darwin and surprise they were absolutely no help at all. They even said I shouldn't even have had premium sound in my xr8 as it wasn't an option. Morons.

Thanks heaps for your help regardless!

I'll have a look at my DVD tonight if I remember.

Your Ford dealer may be correct as a lot of XR's had "Prestige Sound" with the colour screen optioned onto them.

Prestige sound is Premium sound without the sub woofer. Do you have the woofer?

The remotes come up on eBay from time to time anywhere between $20 and $400 but I have never seen the rest of it come up.

In '04 I worked with a guy who got a new Mercury silver XR8 on a car allowance. I got to know the car quite well, as I had to spend every Friday for nearly 2 years travelling around with him. It had the "CGA" style colour screen, along with the subwoofer, and the amp in the LH side of the boot on a funny angle, under the trim. Because of that car, I always thought premium was an XR option at the time. I wouldn't think a Ford dealer would go to the effort (or cost) of a cobbled-up dealer install when he only ticked 3 options - leather, premium sound & 18" alloys, and it was going on a Novated lease.

He did tell me he had to get the leather seats to be able to get the sound - maybe the 'upgrade' for cloth seat cars is the prestige sound that Jim describes? Does prestige also get the tweeters in the base of the A-pillars? His XR8 had those.
Cheers,

Mick

Yep Prestige has the A pilar tweeters just misses the woofer.

I was in a doctors waiting room a few months back and was reading a Wheels magazine (from 2002!) which covered the release of the BA.

Their Fairmont Ghia was identical to mine & they stated that SatNav was standard on the Ghia, Fairlane and LTD I wish...
