My wife recently purchased latest model Mazda 3.
The road noise when on coarse road surface doing highway speeds is really bad, in fact Im sure my 50 year old EH Holden is nowhere as bad!

Anyone have similiar Mazda 3 experiences and is there a fix?

Sorry if bit off topic but hoping you can help.

Maybe it's just the tyres they use? My wife just got a new lease car, a Mazda6. We went from a VE Calais to this. The Calais is streets ahead in terms of road noise and quietness. I miss the v8!

Yeah, we just bought a new Mazda 3 and it's the same, loud road noise. We were warned by a friend whose wife has one also. I believe it is the tyres. I haven't really looked into any fixes as it doesn't really bother us.
Cheers

This is a very common complaint with late model small/medium cars. The problem is most are now equipped with larger diameter alloys & silly low profile tyres as standard on the up-market models. Sure they handle better than those with taller tyres, but the downside is the extra road noise & choppy ride. Some tread patterns are known to be much worse than others also.

It's such a well known problem on Mazdas & Hondas that the dealers make sure that the lower spec models are used as demos so that the problem isn't shown up on a new car test drive. Then they just up-sell to the higher spec car without mentioning anything about the changes in tyres or noise. If the prospective buyer really wants to test the top spec car, they make sure that the tyre pressures are as low as practical to help with the noise.

The problem is far less obvious on proper cars like a Commodore or Falcon but even then I much prefer 16" to anything larger especially for driving around on crappy Sydney roads.

You can add Mitsubishi Lancer to the noisy car list.
shocking, you can't hold a conversation front to back seat
without raising our voice.
30 year old holdens "with" 18" rims and low profile tyres are
still much better for cabin noise levels.

I must be getting old, the current crop of car adverts do not tell me anything about the car that I want to know or would consider as a selling point.

bluetooth, connectivity, alloys, never an awkward moment, WTF are they appealing to?
How about telling the consumer that its a noisy as hell and will annoy you every time you drive it! NEVER.

Balfizar, I'm with you. frod seem to be the worst offenders, but now
Holden has chimed in too.

Scarcely a mention of how it functions as a car, plenty on connectivity & other crap I have no use or interest in.
