Heard an interesting story yesterday. Seems that modern imported cars with autos eg late model Toyotas specify type IV auto transmission fluid. Many late model manuals also run auto transmission fluid of type IV spec. Guess what? You can't mix type III and IV fluids. Toyota or Mazda aparantly have sent out an alert on this. My mate had his new Corolla serviced at a Toyota dealer the other day. Guess what fluid they use? - Dexron III. When the two fluids are mixed they go all gummy. He insisted they pull the pan off and guess what? It was all gummy inside. The dealership didn't even have any type IV fluid at all. He had to pay for a 20L drum to be sent up from Sydney and have the whole transmission, cooler and lines flushed and then refilled with type IV.
Moral - if you have a vehicle that specifies type IV auto transmission fluid (even if it's a manual) get it checked out. The biggest auto transmission company in Newcastle didn't even know this. I'll see if I can get the link to the alerts. |

Hmm...get I am so glad I drive old cr@ppy Holden's from the 1970's !! Sure they chew a bit more juice...around 15.4l/100km, but so much worth it.

on the subject. what is the propper fluid for trimatics? i have always used dextron III without problems

Tri-Matics are fine with Dexron II or III.
