Hi there, going to look at 78 HZ Statesman tomorrow over here in NZ. The guy reckons that it is a Chevrolet Statesman, has the 350, and Chev badges. I thought the Chevrolet Statesmans were only 72 - 74. Would appreciate some guidance on this.

Hi Tone.
AFAIK they didn't make 350 HJ/HX/HZ Statesmans, even for export.
Also, to my knowledge the Chevrolet Constantias & Caprice Classics (they weren't called Chevrolet Statesmans) finished in 1975.

Also the HQ was always to be the last of the 350s, the HJ was to be a 400. I have two road tests on HJ statesmans that mention the 400, one at release and another on the Caprice inearly 76. The later article mentions a Chevrolet they were going to use as

I always thought they were built in Australia and exported to South Africa, just like the NZ cars. HG Monaros (or their derivative) were built up until about 1973/4 for the SA market. |

Weren't they initially made here and shipped to Sth Africa and then later exported in CKD kits and assembled over there?
Cheers...Dave

HI all, thanks for the replies. It was as I thought a De Ville with Chev badges on it. Rust bubbling though under the roof and bottom of doors so passed on the car.

Hi Guys.
The South Africa Chevs were both exported fully built & as CKD packs & then assembled in S.A.
