hey everyone, im trying to find out an approximate build date of my HK GTS 307 Monaro, it is a Sydney built car has a firewall number of 307**SS, any help would be appreciated

Seriously? You want us to help with a build date... yet you cant display the entire number?

What can possibly happen by posting the full number????

It was built after July 1968 and before 1970.

If it has a firewall number of 307**SS then it is dodgy.

firstly, the numbers on my car I have paid legitimate good money for, and who I show them to is my business and to through entire numbers up on a public forum for people that manipulate numbers to rebuild fakes and cars that are made from three or ten cars and then sell them to people that have no idea and even to you if they are good enough at it would love me to do so, think about it

on the second comment, can you explain why a number 307**SS would be fake, if you are going to publicly say on a Holden forum that anyone who owns a HK Monaro with a firewall number 307**SS has a fake or is bodgey then the comment should be backed up with your expertise and knowledge to say so,

waiting to hear your reply with anticipation

I think you'll find people here very helpful, and what they are trying to say, if somewhat tactlessly, is that you'll need to provide more information, and that the SS suffix doesn't seem to follow the norm. Not impossible that it is correct, but unusual.

Firstly how can you possibly expect ANYONE to be able to tell you when a HK was built by the characters **SS. All you can tell is the body was built at Pagewood and the car was assembled at Pagewood. Nothing else.

Secondly I say it because I know what i'm talking about, and if you knew these cars as I and many others here do you'd know that ALL Pagewood body plant and Pagewood assembled HK's have a chassis number in the form HKxxxxxSS. If it doesn't it is not an original body plant chassis number. End of story. Full stop.

ok, so what you are saying is that the number should be HK307**SS to be genuine and not a fake, my number is HK307**SS,

I didn't put the HK at the start because I didn't think that it was an important part of the entire number to get an approximate build date, I put the SS at the end to show that it is a Pagewood car,

not trying to scam or manipulate anything, I own the car and have for some time now but I don't have its original books, the car has lived a good life of 45 years presents in good original condition

I was born in 1968 myself, just would have liked to find out if it was close to my birth date which falls in the HK build period

That makes far more sense and is far less confusing! I can tell you HK23xxxSS are June-July 1968 so HK307xxSS being 7000-8000 cars later is more than likely in the July-August region. Unfortunately chassis numbers on these aren't an exact science as the Pagewood numbers were put on straight after paint so were done in the body plant, meaning if the car was delayed for whatever reason (which many V8 HK Monaros and GTS's were) then it can get out of whack a little with its final completion date. However the PSN (end part of the VIN) gives you a far better indication as it was allocated and put on near to the end of the assembly plant at Pagewood at this time.

I'm no Guru but wouldn't the steering box give an indication (if not a replacement)of approx build date along with some other spots on the car body

Steering box helps a bit, as does column. Will get you close to the mark.

...there are a lot of ways to "date" your car and a pretty easy way, if the car is showing a lot of originality, is to check the date codes on the back of the instruments....they don't wear out so much as a lot of the mechanical items do....just a thought....cheers fellas

thankyou HK1837, the Pagewood background was interesting,

I was told that the early HK bodies or that some of them came through the Pagewood plant with the "A" pillars having a slight ridge in them that was different from all other HK bodies,

do you know if there is any truth to that?

Yes, early ones. Both of my Pagewood GTS's have the early pillars. Both are June bodies, late June or early July assembly. I also have an early Acacia Ridge Monaro with them too.

I do not for the life of me know why people think that the full chassis number is such a secretive thing. It is the number that the car is registered by and nothing else. No two cars can have the exact same chassis number so putting it up here or anywhere else makes no diference. infact if your car is registered and has a rego lable this is the number that would be on the label. For ALL the world to see.

if it was such a secretive number then they would never put it on display on the rego label.

Later models have the equiv. number displayed in an opening in the front windscreen.

The "hysteria" around these numbers is generated by people who FA about Holden numbering systems and make false statements, scaring peope into thinking they are going to loose their car if someone knows its identity. The chassis numbers does not tell you what the car was only that it was a HK built in Sydney, so if you wanted to not let peolple know it was something specialou could have said I have a Premier with chassis number HK30712SS, can anyone date this chassis number and we would be no wiser that you owned a Monaro.

My First HK GTS was HK28113SS and was a very early August 68, being regoed 19/8 and having the body plate located on cowel panel instead of firewall. It also had no boot or glovebox light and latter pillars.

Given Warren's was early August 1968 assembly then that narrows HK307xxSS to an August 1968 assembly, assuming the body went into the assembly plant without too much delay after it was painted.

thanks for the help guys, it looks like she's just a little older then me, which is all I was wanting to find out,

I understand that putting my numbers up on display will do no harm to my car and only an idiot would use the same number as one already out there,

what I am thinking is that if I put my number up here on the forum and we talk about its build date etc, someone who might be fudging a Monaro with a body number that is close to it, either on a shell already or purchased with some tags on an auction site, then reading this forum he would be getting the heads up on what dates to look for to build the car from other parts/cars and could sell it off as something its not to someone non the wise,

only trying to eliminate the possibility

Hi Monitor,

you have given your chassis number to the last 100 cars, somewhere between HK30700SS and HK30799SS. If you take that Holden made 199000 HKs over 18 months, working 5 days a week that is 530 cars per day. There were 5 plants and Sydney made more than their share, so over 100 cars per day. So the info you gave, with enough info, should be able to track to a day. (if you take mine was early 8th month then Pagewood made around 28000 cars in 7 months, thats around 4000 per month, 1000 per week, around 200 per day, on a 16 hour shift day thats 12.5 cars per hour or one every 4.8 minutes)

Why anyone would stamp a new number into a frame and then try and date it from your car. Could they not simnply ask on a forum like you have?
