Hi All, excuse if there a thread on this topic but haven't come across it yet.
I am changing my HR crash box to a 3 speed synchromesh box and have all ready encounter problems. The gearbox I have got is from a HG wagon. Apart from the usual change of hydraulics for the clutch, driveshaft length change and the gearbox cross member I have now experienced a gear linkage problem.
Question is do I have to change the gear selector in the steering column, which I think I do, is this easily done or do I have to change the whole thing to a HT HK or HG??
At this stage any help would be appreciated

The linkages work in a completely different way as you have found out.
Most people go to a floor shift but I have a vague memory of someone doing a conversion so that the crash box column can operate the all synchro box.

Hi James Thanks for your reply. After doing a lot of research I can certainly see why a conversion to floor change is done. Seams to be a lot easier, nevertheless, I managed to find a contact in Australia who do the column change conversions. The company web address is www.earlyholdenparts.com.au he was very helpful and knowledgeable and would recommend anyone looking at doing a conversion, and want to keep the original look, to go to this place. Good to know. I wondered how people did this without changing to a HK-HG column. |

Yes true point HK.
One thing I noted with the changing to a later model steering column such as HK-HG was the steering box is different. The HR mounts for the steering box don't bolt through the chassis where as the HG does and if a hole is drilled for a mount in the chassis it will need to be certified again. I mention this car because this is the model I got the transmission from. Also the arm off the steering box [obviously] is different as well, so it's a rather large conversion but I guess in the long run it will be better than the old crash box.

Did you try using a rail off a HK? HR and HK are that close in design i'd be surprised if it wouldn't fit reasonably easily. The floors, leafs, firewall etc are all pretty much the same. A HK-HT 307 and 'glide drops straight into a HR using all HK bits too. |

Hey HK thanks for the info. No I haven't tried it. The problem is these cars are become more and more difficult to get a hold of and it's not very often anything comes up for sale. I have had to purchase a lot of parts for my car from Australia however it's a sit an wait and keep your eyes peeled. I keep look for a HK but nothing yet. Like I mentioned a waiting game.

I looked at a HK next to a HR yesterday. Subframe is fairly different. Firewall and body is very similar but not the front clip. |
