Can anyone explain how the first VT pilot cars were assembled?
I believe they would of been hand assembled or did they go down the line?
Were they all yellow plated pilot cars or not?
Can anyone explain?

I doubt many people really care at the moment, to be blunt. VT's are right now a $100 car. Eventually people will start to get interested but at the moment they are of little interest or are at best donor cars for older stuff. All cars go through this stage, we used to gut HK GTS's and HQ GTS's by the hundreds for parts to put on utes, vans and tonners. I used to go to wrecking ads in the papers in the 80's, probably 2 or 3 every saturday to see a HQ coupe or GTS sedan being wrecked.
Plus you are probably asking in the wrong place, question would be better asked at Holden where the process is probably still the same. |

The first cars are hand assembled several times in a special workshop to work out the best method of assembly and to train plant operators in the process.
Then some vehicles are sent down the line to see how it works in practice. The first production line pilots can be several months before release.
The yellow tag cars seem to be the ones that are not sold when they are finished with. We have a Statesman at work that is an ex yellow tag car as it has no body plate. It has a VIN number and will never be registered.

You need a reality check mate.
Its not all about you and what you like or want to hear.
Some of us are interested in other stuff and may i suggest to you if you want to maintain a healthy forum you better start realizing we are all individuals and have different tastes.
Just because you think a VT is a 100 car doesn't mean your right, because your not and just because the VT isn't your cup of tea for doesn't mean it can't be discussed on an open forum.

There was no shutting you down. You asked a question, and then seemed to get shirty when no-one answered. I was simply telling you the reason I thought why no-one had answered.
Many VT's are $100 cars at the moment, simple fact, so if you don't like that fact don't blame me for it. A friend of mine buys them at his door for that at his wrecking yard.
So take your own advice and get a reality check, and realise it ain't all about YOU either, which was how I took your second comment. If I was wrong then you have my apology. |

Hello Phil. Great to see you are passionate about your car.
There is a wealth of knowledge here, and I encourage you to continue to tap into it. Just bear in mind that not everyone has the detailed information you seek, so please be a little patient and the information will come.
As Byron said, not everyone is into VT at the moment but don't let that deter you, as not everyone was into HKTG Monaros 20 years ago either. I agree with Byron, hundreds of them were cannabalised to make Belmonts and Kingswoods "better", or just plain wrecked and the remains deposited in the tip or at Sims metal.
From your other posts it sounds like you have a special VT, so good for you, and I'm sure everyone here would encourage you to continue learn about it.
Just remember that this forum will not provide the instant gratification an internet search will, as it mostly relies on grizzled old men with the specialised knowledge you need pressing the "Submit Reply" button! (Sorry in advance Warren)

Have you got a copy of the small book Holden put out on the VT, from memory it has some of the pre production assembly pics in it.

Was looking at the VT projct book last night, pages 30 and 31 show the early pilot hand assembled cars being put together.
