Hi all. This is a part specific, part general, question about value of cars on general. I have always harboured a love of the HQ prem, and would live to own a top condition, standard prem (brown and 253 preferably). A year or so ago I purchased a deceased estate (second owner) HJ Caprice (brown!), all original and complete except for grille and wheels, matching number motor, etc. I recently decided to "tackle it" and get it on the road, and in true rookie fashion typical of someone who has sound mechanical capability but naive when it comes to all things body, closer investigation shows pretty bad rust issues in the usual spots.
Estimates are I'm up for 4 - 6K to get all rust professionally fixed (through contacts) and maybe another $2k to get it on the road. This got me looking at the value of the HJ Caprice against the HQ Prem. Seems the Prems hold their value quite well (though there's a few online that have been on sale for a long time), and HJ caprice not so much. Any reason for this other than just "what people" value? |

A Premier is the top spec Holden (alongside its coupe equivalent the LS).
The Caprice is the top spec GMH product (in HJ in Australia, although HQ Caprices were part of the HQ lineup but only for export or consular duty). But a 253 Premier or LS will always suffer in value - ideally you'd want to chase one with the biggest optional engine available ie a 308 in a Premier sedan or a 350 in an LS. Neither will normally be worth as much though as the GTS versions of their respective body styles.
I think in a HJ you'll find a fully optioned Premier (ie 308, air, steer, metallic) would pull more than a HJ Caprice but not a huge difference. Add maybe $7k or more if the Premier was a HQ. I reckon a 308 HQ Premier (esp a 4spd) in the same condition as a HQ 350 Deville would probably see the same result (ie Premier more popular). Even better if you were lucky enough to find a 350 powered HQ Premier. |

Also what I would be looking at is asking myself. Which car would I be happy with to own and drive. If you truly would enjoy owning and driving the HQ, then that is what I would do.
If you think the HJ will make more money, and you have a realisation that you may only keep the car for a few years, then that is the car I would do. |
