Since the last HG commericals used the 173 & 202 motor, what 4 speed was optional? Aussie/Opel/Saginaw?
Not dying to know but I am wondering. |

You couldn't option a 4spd on a 6cyl HG Commercial. It was removed from the order form at HG release (you could in later HK and HT). In theory post HQ HG V8 commercials were optionable with M21 4spd (Saginaw) however I have internal Company documents dated 30/3/71 that state that L31/M21 was very limited availability on any V8 HG model, so by the time HG passenger production was finished in May '71 it would be very rare to find at least a 4spd 308. I cannot recall ever finding a 4spd 253 HG commercial from later '71 either. |

Like most things there is always the exception. I have a mate in our car club with 2 HG utes, both complied late 1970. One is a 253 4-speed & the other a real 186 4-speed. Like Byron, I've never seen anything other than M15 3-sp manual or Tri-Matics in a late HG (173 or 202) commercial. The rarest HG that I've seen was a 6/71 HG Premier wagon with a 202 fitted. It was a few years ago & I didn't record the numbers, however it had a GL engine prefix which matched the owners manual. Dr Terry |

The 1970 253 4spd would be a normal thing Terry, the 186 would be a special order as it isn't on the order form. The rarest one I've ever heard of is an early HK GTS optioned as an M21, it is a close chassis number to my Warwick yellow V8 cars probably built in the same few days. |
