You won't get a 3.36:1 V8 banjo, the only way you could get a 3.36:1 rear axle in a HG V8 was if you also optioned a 308 and then a 3.36:1 LSD Salisbury came standard. The only rear axles available with 253 were 3.08 and 2.78 banjos with LSD optional. I'm pretty sure LH-LX Torana were the same, ie only 2.78 or 3.08 in V8 banjo and mostly fine spline too. So either you'll have to chase down a Salisbury and pay through the nose for one (as axles are not cheap) or get a V8 3.36:1 coarse spline banjo which will be a made up centre from a 6cyl one using a V8 yoke. You may also find a 3.08:1 Salisbury out of a HK-HG but these are as expensive as the 3.36: variety. It will in the end be cheaper to get Moser to build you up a 10 bolt or 12 bolt complete rear assembly and freight it over. When I spoke to them last what I had to do was send them the overall width (measure off a banjo), and send then some ends off a banjo housing so they can get the ends correct and for the mount relationship to the ends (which sets up the correct pinion angle). They really wanted to send to me without the mounts and me get them welded on here. I was going HQ so they were just going to make the ends as per 4.75" GM but if you want HK-HG you'll also have to give them the axle flange diameter and centre spigot size and tell the 5 x 4.25" with also the stud size. http://www.moserengineer...er-rear-end-package.htmlIt'll probably cost you about $3500 or so but you'll get a brand new posi centred 12 bolt diff in whatever ratio you want that you'll never break. Compare that to spending maybe $2500 on a flogged out old HK-HG 10-bolt that you'll have to spend over $1000 on parts for. Only thing to be wary of if the hump GMH put in cars and fuel tanks with a 10-bolt. It isn't necessary for a 10-bolt, but it sort of is for a 12-bolt, so be wary of bump stop and clearances with a 12-bolt. Or get a 9" made up locally. |

Thanks for the info, I've discovered how much of a pain in the butt it is to get a V8 diff for the car, its only a belmont wagon factory 253 with column manual (very nice condition prior to the a$$holes stealing it). but don't know if i can afford the $3k diff upgrade at present to get it back on the road. Truth be told the weakness of the banjo probably saved the car from being further trashed.

That car will have been standard with 3.08: banjo. Finding one won't be that bad but they are getting harder to get. You may have to get a 6cyl one out of a Torana and change the yoke. You could do the same with a 3.36 as well, but your housing may have been modded for the 3.36 already. |

HI if I get a 3.36 out of a 6cyl will this be too weak for a V8? is it just a matter of changing the centre and the yoke, or do i have to change axles etc.

It will work, but you'll have to take it to a diff shop and get the yoke changed to a V8 one. The only difference in the whole rear assembly between 6cyl and V8 is the yoke, plus the ratios of course. Has your housing already been modified to suit the 3.36 carrier? |
