My elderly mother has lost her only key to her ford futura 1999 station wagon. She was in hospital for 3 months and the key has never turned up. she was beside herself. A lovely locksmith has cut her a new key so she could close the window of the vehicle as it had been raining. But told her she would need to pay or payoff $400 before they would program the key (I believe a smart key no buttons).
Is there a way of programing the key she is using her food money and I live so far away.

In 1999 Ford changed their immobiliser system from the old 'Smartlock' style which had been around since EB, to the newer 'Smartshield' system.

This occurred in mid AU series 1 production around July '99.

Why I'm telling you all of this, is that the older style system does not require the key to be programmed. It is the barrel which contains that info. Once a new key has been cut, put it in & drive away.

The newer Smartshield set-up requires the key to be programmed to the car, using a dedicated scanner.

The easy way to tell one system from the other, is that the newer Smartshield system has a little hand in the instrument cluster, which lights up red when you first turn the ignition on.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0
