G'day All .. Just asking a question about these obscure stainless forward wheel arch gravel shields that seem to be a hit-and-miss fitment to either the EJ's originally, but possibly fitted to some EH's as well ??

...I've been through the MPC for the EJ, and in particular the accessories section with no result, but in a recent perusing of some period pics and official factory photos, they seem to pop up here and there, and especially on the commercials....any thoughts from the learned crew ??

This one is very confusing, but here is what I've learned.

When the EJ was first released (July '62 - sedan & wagon only) these shields were just an accessory for all models (incl. Premier) & rarely seen.

Around Oct '62 they were brought intro production as standard equipment for all sedans & wagons, due to customer complaints of paint damage in this area, from stones etc. on country roads. I have a service bulletin to this effect, I'll dig it out & post it on the forum.

When the EJ ute & van was introduced in early '63 they also received them as standard.

Then in strange move, they were deleted for all models for the EH release, even on Premiers. They were again relegated to just an accessory for EH.

...thanks Dr Terry .. I figured the commercial range (and possibly some station wagons) may've had them as a result of having wider section, higher ply rating tyres which might've led to increased stone chipping on that forward face ??

...was the EH road wheel (or track for that matter) different to the EJ ? ...possibly more offset to the inside ?

...just a late addition. The 48-EJ factory MPC shows a pic of a fully optioned EJ in the accessories section near the beginning of the book covering 31 individual accessory items....no mention or picture of these gravel shields at all, although a sill moulding is noted as an option. The MPC also has the 2104/2106 designations noted, so these shields must've come along a little while even after their introduction into the range...

No, the width & offset of the EH road wheel is the same as EJ, actually the same back to FE.

...yes Dr Terry, I thought that reasoning may've been a bit of a long shot...but it appears the EH commercials were possibly fitted with these shields from the outset ?

...I finally found the shields in the body panel section of the MPC and interestingly they are listed as a package first, then as an individual item along with the screws and spacers required by part number. These obscure little details are interesting as there are very few ardent restorers, especially of the EJ's, to bother about these minor discrepencies. It's a bit like trying to find a correctly restored 1951 Holden ute that DOESN'T have gravel shields. (they weren't fitted until very late 1951/early 1952)

The son-in-laws EJ is an early and was never fitted with them and we left it that way. Many have asked why he does not have them, and that he should fit them as they "look good".
