I have the chance of buying a hk Monaro that was badly damaged years ago and left to sit in a shed with a dirt floor,in my eyes the car can be restored, unfortunatly it has the id,s missing, the firewall number is HK50861A, it has a second type engine, starting in 3277,but has the type 1 bellhousing with fork on drivers side, is there any record of this car, and or any way I could chase up the history of it from the firewall number. if any of you guru,s on here could help so I kmow what to offer this guy for the car.thanks in advance, benny..

Hi Benny.
As you are in Victoria try the Association of Motoring Clubs. Can you obtain the last rego number on this car? If it was registered in Victoria you can supply your chassis number and rego number if you have it. They have all the rego and engine number records up to 1984, however, they don't have any personal details such as name and location etc.
I have a HG Van and I could only supply the chassis number. After checking about 6000 rego cards they found my original rego number, engine number and when my engine was replaced and what rego number my engine was fitted to and when. It cost me $175.
They are Volunteers but they sure put some work in finding all my Vans details. On top of that I was able to get pics of my rego card, engine number card and a pic of the HR Van rego/engine number card my engine was fitted to.
I am still looking for my original engine. 161H322145...... One day?
Good luck Benny.

The AOMC might be able to help with original details but not the car's body number or paint/trim. Although the paint/trim will probably be easy enough with a bit of archaeological work.

All HK had the same bellhousing, as they all had 10.5" flywheel. The engine may be original as there are 1968 GTS327's with Canadian engines. RigPig has one, there are others.

I wouldn't spend huge $ restoring it though as it will never be anywhere near as valuable as a car with its tags. Maybe it might make a nice modified?

the firewall numbers there, and the engine with engine number, as well as old rego info and paint is silvermink with black trim..HK50861A.. but unfortunately tags are gone.. engine is complete minus carby, has gearbox still bolted to it, and 10 bolt diff is still there as well as big tank and covers, no seats or console, was trying to find history of tags if they have ever been recorded, so will keep hunting, and a bit more detective work and see what I can find, thanks everyone..

Even if you find the tags details, they are gone so spending too much $ on it might be folly.

...I reckon if the lack of tags are duly recorded as part of its chequered history, there shouldn't be much in the way to embark on carrying out a first class restoration. Most old cars that have gone through a restoration would've seen their fair share of "indiscetions" inflicted upon them....I see no real issue with this unfortunate hurdle.

Sure, but the end result will be worth probably less than what was spent on it! Hence the folly mentioned. It'd be valued probably similar to a replica built from a Monaro. Personally i'd do it as a nice GTS with different running gear, like 377, Muncie and 9".
