Hi,

I've had this ongoing problem for months. The car is an 82 WB Statesman, with disk brakes allround and a 2.60 LSD Diff. When I brake the car pulsates and slightly shudders. I've had all of the disks replaced, machined and checked. The pads also check out OK. The disks have been checked for runout, and they're fine. I'm begining to suspect the problem doesn't lie with the brakes themselves. The brake lines are fine, as I've replaced the flexible lines recently. There are no brake fluid leaks. The axels are fine as I've had them checked for bends. (I've been round this merry-go-round a few times - another year and I'll have a brand new WB!)

So my questions are:
What braking problems would I expect if I had cracked control arm mounts / cracked frame / crap sway bar rubbers?

What braking problems would I see if I had a vacuum leak?

The rear springs (standard height) don't seem to sit in their position fimly. I see there are coil spring spacers of different height available. Why are there different sizes and should I change? Do they impact on braking?

Has anybody got any ideas? I'm quite frustrated and very mucher poorer for this. Don't suggest "buy a new Statesman" - I already want to, but I really like the old girl.

Thanks muchly

Peter

Hmm - you've done most of the usual stuff. Where did the rear diff come from ? Orig or other ? Are all brake lines same diameter ? Are the rubber boots that push the brake pistons out OK ? Not jammed or sticky. What rims are you running, size and tyre spe

Hi Peter,

I agree with John that you have done most of the usual stuff.

A couple of ideas from left field here...is there a "Reaction disc" in the back of your booster? If there is, is it sitting properly? Do you have a lumpy cam in your motor? Do y

Well, I think its finally fixed. Thanks guys for your suggestions. We went through all of them, and managed to cross a few off the list straight away, but it was actually something I thought I had covered. So the mechanic went back to first principles --

Peter,

Thank you for letting us know what it was and that we were not even in the right ballpark. :-)

Excellent news that you have it fixed...happy motoring mate.

Cheers...Dave
