What is the general consensus when fitting the water pump just use the gasket on its own or should silastic be used as well, should bolts be tighten to specific torque settings? and might as well throw in the thermostate housing as well , silastic?

gasket seal number 3 I wouldn't bother with the torque wrench just do them tight not Toyota tight as in don't tighten shit out of the bolts

Be careful of the tension on the two centre lower bolts assuming Holden V8. They are into alloy and strip. If you have a helicoil kit put some in as a precaution.

I have always used the gasket and bolted it up as is to a reasonable torque, but only used a gasket sealer if I think it needs it, due to how good the condition of the facings are.

If your thermostat is corroded at all then toss it, I got a pin hole in one that destroyed a good engine, the temp gauge only read half way with no water in it, must of pissed out the pin hole when I was at the pub and when I drove home I could not hear it whistling until I turned it off.

Are you referring to the thermostat or the housing as they're a bugger to seal if they start to corrode. the after market ones are the worst, especially if you've been using that cheap green anti freeze. That stuff eats alloy.
