Whilst technically this is not anything related to Holden, I've stuck it here in Holden general discussion as it is probably of interest to some.
Just read the latest Motor magazine. HSV are going to convert and sell the MY18 update Camaro SS. According to the article it will have the 339kW LT1 engine at least initially, plus the 10spd auto and the price aim is $80-$90k AUS. This has come with the blessing of both GM (who will sell the cars to HSV at a greatly reduced rate) and Holden (so import limits are removed). Supposedly these will be sold as Chevrolet Camaro by HSV dealers, meaning I think the first Chevrolet badged vehicle to be sold here new in volume since about 1980 when GMH stopped assembling the C20/K20/C30/C50/C60 trucks.
The HSV Chevrolet Camaro SS will be converted to RHD with the HSV Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks also being converted by Walkinshaw. Also heard that the Ram 1500 will also be sold here new soon, with Hemi V8 or a 3.0L V6 diesel, but will probably still top $100k.
So at least in the next 5-10 years we will have some decent priced used vehicles around to buy with used Camaro and Ram 2500/3500 up for grabs that have been converted properly. Of course we'll have used VF and VFII for a while as well if that suits the buyer. If the Camaros keep coming you'd expect a good used one at 3 years and 40,000kM to be had for $45k. |

With so many similarities with the platform to other global RWD platforms, it was a no-brainer for them - many of the required parts can be easily sourced or adapted without too much trouble from VE/VF parts.
At least the cost is reasonable. Unlike the Hellcat, which are sitting near $200K for one already done (and expect no change from $160K chasing it all through yourself). |

At last something is announced as GMH have been considering this for the last couple of years. Maybe they have realised that they need something to keep a GM image of power as the Ford Mustang promotion keeps the Blue Oval in the spotlight. With all the suppliers of Aftermarket components there should be a long life for the Australian built Commodores.

Great to hear their will be a V8 for Holden/HSV fans I was reading an article the other day about the overwhelming sales and popularity in OZ with the Ford Mustang, a Head Honcho from the USA was sent out to talk to local purchasers to understand why it is so revered here. It is a big Market here for Ford USA just a shame the new Chev is a little pricey for those wishing to buy one brand new but would certainly be an attractive used car as HK mentioned in years to come.

Remember that there is conversion costs associated with the Camaro, and with those Ram trucks. The Mustang was Engineered and tooled for RHD, so it is far cheaper. When Holden Engineered the previous Zeta based Camaro it was Engineered and meant to be also tooled RHD but the GFC hit after Engineering, and the RHD tooling was cancelled. The Alpha platform Camaro of today is LHD only and has to be converted. If the market is seen as lucrative enough you may see RHD tooling, but my guess is that may only happen in the truck segment. If one of the other manufacturers see success from the HSV converted Ram and Silverado trucks you may see them come here as factory RHD hence cheaper. Maybe Toyota with the Tundra or Ford with the F150 or F250. The problem is this country is obsessed with damn diesels, so we get these tiny pissant little diesels with their tunes screwed up so high they are fragile. The Ram 2500 and 3500 have a massive 6.7L turbo diesel putting out over 1000nM torque, and the 1500 has a nice Hemi V8 petrol engine. Idiots here will probably try to fit factory trucks with engines half that size. I'd Love a Ram 1500 with 5.7L Hemi V8 but I ain't paying 2.5-3 times what they are in the USA. Sorry to say but I'm down on these Camaro's.
The Mustang GT and Camaro ss are priced and speced very close to each other in the USA. Out here the GT is priced at $55K and the SS at $90K. The local press will nail this point for the life of the car while offered here. Crazy bad value for money.
Holden and GM feel they are doing us a big favour bringing these vehicles in as well as the next Corvette, really! So our $45K base Commo SS can take the family on holidays, take the tinny to the boat ramp of a weekend, drag race on a Wednesday night as well as daily commute and track days. Can be bought at gov auctions for $22K - $25K ex police when 1.5 years old for the budget conscience enthusiast as well. Looking after us traditional enthusiasts, put down the crack pipe GM.
The Camaro will not be $45K after 3 years I feel, more like Vf GTS pricing currently. These were (are) $90K cars and the cheapest one I can find are just under $60K and are 13 model years.
Sorry for the rant but this whole thing just upsets me so much.

I think you are closer to the mark in regards to what the Camaros will be worth when 3-5 years old way to expensive new and even at 3-5 years old you could still be better off buying a Mustang otherwise just hold onto your late model VF I or II , some Euro cars maybe more affordable than the Camaros if they are your thing , will be interesting to see the demand for them at that over inflated pricing.
