Hi all,

I'm not a Monaro expert by any means, but I'm trying to figure out a few details about a particular car that's just a bare roller.

I understand that 80837 means it's a GTS that it had a 253 or 308.
Is there any way to tell which engine it was built with? I acknowledge the tags won't help, but I was wondering if perhaps the brake components are different, or the exhaust hanger brackets are different or something along those lines etc.

Regarding the transmission, there's no hole in the tunnel, so I know it was column shifted. There's no pedals either, so I cannot tell if it was a 3 on the tree or a column shifted auto.
Is there any evidence left behind by a clutch pedal, ie. different mounting holes in the firewall? Different tunnels for man/auto?

Was it possible to order any combo of 253/308/auto/column 3 spd?

If its column shift it will not be an 80837.

If it has 80837 tags then these do not belong to the car and can be disregarded and the car is either a 80337 or 80437.

Your possible combinations are:

161/186/186S/253 3 speed manual or trimatic
308 trimatic

A full inspection of the body by an expert would narrow it down a bit further.

Thank you Warren. I was hoping you'd reply.
It's becoming apparent this car may be a bit of a bitza, so I'm exploring all possibilities as to it's origins.
The tags are off the car, so who knows............

Since my initial post, I've learnt that the complete floorpan has been replaced, so now even my belief if was a column shift car is in doubt.

To ID the trans type:
Does the firewall give away any info? ie, Do all manual HG's have a hydraulic clutch? Only V8's?
Are manual pedal mounting holes different to autos?

And maybe help to ID the engine type:
Is the firewall mounted throttle linkage mounting different between 6cyl and V8 cars?
Are exhaust hanger brackets different in 6cyl vs V8 bodies?
Sometimes brake pipe routing is different between some V8 and cyl models too, I know early Mustangs can be identified by these differences.

The location of the speedo cable hole may give some clue as to original trans type.

Only 350 has Hydraulic clutch in HG.

Pedal mount is all the same.

Auto throttle linkage has support on firewall near brake booster, all others same.

All exhaust hangers the same.

All brake line routing the same,

If it is a 837 then it will be floor shift but if entire floor changed then hard to tell what it is. Check for Salisbury hump on front edge of fuel tank opening, tank and floor are different if factory Salisbury rear axle. If there it is a 308 car.

The chassis number will be reproduced on the ADR plate so it is easy to tell if that tag belongs to the body. The numbers on the other two tags (VIN and BODY numbers) will also tell if the tags don’t belong together.

Can anyone expand on the relationship between the numbers on the VIN and BODY tags, and there is any way to determine if they are likely to have come from the same car as the ADR tag?

I know with some other cars, it's deemed to be acceptable if the body and chassis numbers are withing a few hundred numbers of one another. Is that the case with these?

You won’t be able to do it yourself. Only someone with tens of thousands of original cars recorded can do it. If you put its numbers up here someone will most likely be able to tell you if they don’t belong together. Or will be able to find out for you.
