A mate is looking at a HD sedan and wants me to give it the once over. While I know HQs fairly well, I've never owned or even worked on a HD. So, what to look for? Rust in the usual places obviously, but any HD specific areas to look for? I've got a list of codes for Holden engines, is there any way to tell if the engine is original to the car? Ball joint or kingpin front end? King pins were before my time, never worked on 'em. Any clue to when the change over was made?

If you get the tag number, chassis number off the centre of the firewall (including the second letter after the rib) and the engine number someone here will be able to put it all together for you.
They aren't very different to a HK and rust in similar places, like the front floors and sills. HR's that I have seen rust up under the rear screen (look in the boot), HD's should be similar. Front guard lowers, inside the boot on the low surfaces. Look at the front subframe lower legs where they attach to the floor, HD-HG rust here. Also the firewall where the subframe attaches, but you will only see this from inside the cab if it is really bad. You should be experienced enough to check the doors and door frames easily enough. Bolts-on panels are still reasonably available for these too so don't be put off if the main rust is in removeable panels.

Post the numbers off your car, i.e. chassis no., engine no., numbers of the body ID plate & the date stamp off steering box. Then we can work it out for you.
The date of the changeover to ball joints was officially 1st June 1965, but this would vary from factory to factory depending on the stocks of kingpin units leftover.
