Hi all,
I'm sure I've read this before somewhere but can't seem to track the answer down. I've an HZ 1 tonner in the process of a loooonnnnggggg refit.Years ago I fitted power steering. I have heard there are different length outer steering arms the power steering needs to achieve the right ratio. Right now the steering feels excessively light and as its never had power steering before I suspect the present arms are too long. Can someone give me the lengths of the 2 types of arms so I can check.

If it didn’t have power steer before it will have longer arms. You want HQ ones, or ones off a car with power steering. |

Byron, fast ratio steering was available as an option in manual steering, would this have been different length steering arms or a different worm drive....

The fast ratio manual steer option (in HQ/HJ) & Monaros GTS models used a different (16:1) worm drive manual box.
It all gets a bit convoluted but in late HJ they introduced the longer steering arms for Kingwood, Premier etc. to lighten the steering. This was because by now most cars had radial ply tyres & many had 6" rims & this made the steering effort heavier at parking speeds compared to earlier cars which had cross plies on 5" rims.
This only applied to manual steering cars, power steer cars (from HQ to WB) always had the shorter arm .
At this time (late HJ) the Monaro GTS models which had the heavier 16:1 box & shorter arms, gained the 20:1 box but retained the short arms, so whilst lighter than HQ GTS they were still heavier (quicker) than the later Kingswoods with the 20:1 box.
