Wondering can a M21 4 speed manual gearbox be mated to a Holden 202 6 cylinder engine and if not how about a 253 or a 308.

a HOLDEN M21 (not Chev M21)... on a 6 cyl needs an adaptor due to the longer input shaft
and
if the 253/308 is a Trimatic type drilled, the M21 is a bolt up (whether pull or push type clutch release)
253/308 Turbo/Chev bolt blocks need a special bellhousing (DELLOW do one).. do not be tempted with an adaptor

apart from a couple of things that don't really matter (eg..early input shaft seal v later version)
the only thing to watch is the side selector. One type has a pollution switch, one does not.
Does not affect how the box works, but can be an issue if you must have the pollution switch
(side covers are swappable)

final point.. watch the use of M20 or M21 or M22
ppl throw the names around... the boxes can be very different in respect of usage in Holden car lines

You can put an Aussie M21 behind a 6cyl. GMH did it in VB Commodore rally cars, just need to use a late LJ XU1 XU1 input shaft in a V8 Aussie M21 box. Plus the 6cyl front cover to suit. There were repro ones around quite cheaply. It will bolt in where any Aussie M20 or M22 goes.
However you don’t really want one behind a Holden 6 unless it’s for race duty. Even behind a 253 they are really too close in ratio. In a heavier car not really much fun, lots of clutch slipping with a low torque engine like a Holden 6.
If you already have an Aussie V8 M21 it is easily rebuildable as an M20 or M22 or even an XU1 box or close ratio L34 box, just need the right bits. They all use the same main parts, all that changes is the input shaft, cluster gear and 3rd gear, the rest is all the same. Apart from the input shaft length difference between 6 and V8. And the slight variations along the way with time as Smitty stated, there is a few of them like the front seal, top gear switch and reverse idler (early ones had a 2 piece reverse idler and used the 3spd main case).
