I believe the trap door style was an option for heavy duty driving. There are a lot of people who say it was a "bathurst" option but I had one on my Hk Kingswood station wagon and it was an untouched original 307 powerglide from the bush. Helps keep the oil near the pickup on hilly areas as well as heavy braking. I'll probably be proven wrong but that's my 2c's worth.

The 5th and 6th batch of 327 Chevrolet engines in HK, the Canadian 327 in late HK and 350 engines (at least the manual ones, not sure about the autos) had the baffled sumps. The initial 4 batches of 327 Chevrolet engines (500 or close to it) had the same style sump as the 307 engines. Norm goes into some detail about this in his new book when they found the oil surge problem at Lang Lang. Remember all of, or almost all of those 307 engines used in HK and HT were built prior to those May 1968 327 engines and there were no more HK-HT 307 engines built after mid July 1968 which was when the final batch of Chevrolet 327 engines were built (in a different engine plant in a different country). I don’t think there were any auto 307 engines built late enough to have got a baffled sump, and there is no option code for it either.
GMH removed the originals and fitted new May 1968 327’s to the three cars they prepared for Bathurst 1968, one reason was for the baffled sumps. |

My Hk Kingswood was, according to Ben, Finish built in the last week of Feb 1969 at Dandy and has the original engine. When removed for a rebuild it appeared to be the first time removed and had standard bore.

Is it a K05xx to K07xx engine plant code? The other possibility I guess is some fool dropped the engine at GMH and they had to replace the sump? |

Interesting thanks, The baffled sump is a slightly different stamping in that it has flats on the sides of the pan for spot welding to the door panel . Would they have been developed in Australia or the USA eg physical clearance around crossmember and steering. And looks like it’s to stop the oil washing to the rear. Cheers
