So this is where all the sh!tboxes go to die. I wonder what happened to the last of the Hyundai Excels! I'd have loved to have got in amongst this with a HD to HG, would have cleaned up and probably been able to be driven home afterwards! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMY-llS6UTQ |

Hey there, thanks for the Youtube link. What fabulous fun, and a great use for these cars! I reckon the HK would have taken them all out, may needed to replace some tailight lenses before driving home. Cheers

The last one I went in was with a HG wagon. It had been a good car, looked like a low mile car that was a bit sun bleached and trim a bit unloved. It easily destroyed an LH Torana, a Valiant and got knocked around by other HD-HG. It did two derbies and was still driveable. Busted engine mounts in the first one which forced the clutch on. Second time a damn electrical connector came apart which killed power to the electric fuel pump. It’s bonnet was bent up a bit and it’s tailgate pushed in but it still drove, tyres still pumped up, steering still working. Yet there were unrecognisable cars out on the paddock. You could have still driven this HG on a highway if you had to. |

I love the car that doesn't even make it around the warm up lap, put out by a runaway wheel. Whoever prepped that car should be shot.

Impale an Excel on each headlight tower and use them like a snow plough.

You can't run full chassis vehicles in Aussie demo derbies. Saw a few Toyota Crown and HQ-WB vans get knocked back at scrutineering. HQ passenger style construction (which is like the later Chevrolet and Pontiac) didn't ever seem to hold up as well in demo derbies as the traditional Holden. I had seen HQ-HZ sedans have the subframe to body tear apart after a few good hits, especially as they were often rusted out in the floor anyway and half of the chassis to body connection bolts are right under your feet where they rust out. The traditional Holdens just crumple up but stay together. I have seen them out there with the rear panel torn across the beaver and pushed right up near the back seat but the rear floor staying there with the springs still attached. |
