Just saw the ID plate on Shaanons web site re the GTS 327 sold in latest auction. Not saying the Body ID plate is false but it is obviously been oversampled from 80837 to 81837. Has anyone knowledge that this would happen in a Holden Plant if they made a mistake when stamping the main body plate ? I would have thought they would make a new one ? Anybody experienced factory error restamped HK body ID plates ?

I got a HJ sandman from Acacia Ridge with a correction from seating capacity of 3 to 2. As you say, why didn't they just make a new plate. I guess they didn't realise this would be relevant in 50 years time!

My mate’s V8 manual HK GTS has 80337 on the VIN tag. He’s owned it since the early 80’s. Mistakes are far more common than you’d think. |

My 5/70 HG Van has Seating Capacity 2 instead of 3. And the tags have never been off the car. |

There are even mistakes that aren't obvious. An example can be seen on Dandenong assembled HQ Statesman. Dandenong appear to have had their ADR plates already stamped with HOLDEN in the middle whereas other Assembly plants didn't always. As an aside, look here - these are repro tags but I think they have been copied off unused Dandenong examples, see the 4th image: https://www.ebay.com.au/...20a1:g:ZTUAAOSwW89eHtVs
When the bulk of the Assembly plants built a car that wasn't a HOLDEN they didn't use the word. You can see the tags in the auction attached are off a Pagewood Deville, notice the HOLDEN word replaced by STATESMAN? https://www.ebay.com.au/...95ba:g:nFIAAOSwsDdguJ08
All the Dandenong assembled HQ Statesman I have seen (which are all Elizabeth BAP, Dandenong VAP) say HOLDEN rather than STATESMAN. All the Bedford and Chevrolet trucks and vans I have with ADR plates say CHEVROLET or BEDFORD where the others say HOLDEN or STATESMAN. I suspect this is why LH-LX tags say HOLDEN in the same spot, but maybe not as most LC and LJ seem to also and the bulk of them are not Dandenong assembly. |

I also saw a HJ or HX Belmont wagon at a wreckers out in the middle of Victoria. It had been given a repeat chassis number on the ADR tag so something like BHJ12345MR but when it got to the end of the assembly plant and they stamped the chassis number into the rail (copying off the ADR tag) they stamped BHJ12345R so added the M on the end, so it read BHJ12345RM. |

Is that # 80837 overstamped 81837 Or 81837 overstamped 80837.? Yes these little anomalies appear, the date stamp on the x member outrigger on my 81837 is stamped 15 H 8 D and move about 4mm, almost over the top it stamped again. Just below quite a distinct mark that most likely occurred during the stamping operation. As for the 81837/80837 mentioned, someone has already said, it was no big deal at the assembly plant back then. No need to throw it away and make a new one. Just overstamp that digit and carry on to the next stage in assembly line. That’s if it was done back then but, as many have learnt if it was done recently WELL now. Could be a lot more than 1s and 0s to deal with.

There is no such thing as a HK 80837. |

I wasn’t suggesting there is anything such as an 80837. The discussion started out with a question relating to a peculiar I.D plate. The discussion revolves around errors of stampings, not whether there is any such thing as a particular model car to suit it or not. That’s for another discussion with Particular cars that were thought never meant to be available that have turned up years later suggesting they did. I’m sure many here would be able relate to that and the debate still goes on.

The point was it cannot be 81837 overstamped 80837, there is no reason that would have happened, has to be 80837 corrected to 81837. |

Well, that makes sense (overstamping a non existing model number) but geez I am glad that TAG is not on my car. Imagine how much explaining you would be doing all the time.
" No, its not a fake, it was a mistake at the Holden factory back in 1968 ! "
It would drive you nuts !

If someone nailed a stamp of the middle 8 over a 3 could have been a 80337,except for paint code I guess.

The dodgy rivets would put me off more than the 1/0. Careful inspection of the body would show if the shell didn’t belong to the tags. In fact a Monaro in that paint with a vinyl roof would be far rarer than a GTS327 with the same combo. |

That isn't the only known example of a HK 81837 Body ID plate from Melbourne with that problem. There are multiple examples. It seems there were some problems with one particular operator at the time.

A bit like the guy who stamped the HQ Pagewood VIN plates with an I (upper case i) instead of an L for the engine identifier. You see so many of those. Dr Terry |
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

I think that was a broken L on the machine Terry. On some you can see a tiny bit of the bottom of the L. |

I just looked at a couple I have recorded, you can see the bottom of the L is half broken off. They wouldn’t have cared, only the PSN mattered. It was the chassis and engine numbers that were important outside GMH. |
