Hi folks,

Is there a simple way to drop the revs out of a trimatic without doing the diff and colour gear tooth change over, or complete rear changeover ? At 80-100kph I am pulling 3300 rpm with what is supposed to be a 308 diff. If crusin on the flat at 100-110 is 3300. Doing 80kmh up a hill its 3300.

Is there a simple way to drop the revs to say 2500rpm without going to 2.78 ? Is there a Trimatic overdrive conversion kit. Maybe a T400 will do ?

I wanna keep the T-bar look but add some smarts and reduce revs and fuel usage. I do a lot of work at 100kmh. So Byron & Dr T put your thinking hats on.

Cheers John

What motor are we talking here John? If it is a turbo block 308, easy peasy, bolt a T700 from VN/VP behind it.

I have heard talk that you can now get adaptor plates to bolt the V6 T700 up to red motors...not a fan of adaptor plates myself, but may be w

doesnt sound right to me. I think your diff is wrong... You think that top in the trimatic would be 1:1.

I have a 3.36 diff with a tri and at 100k's it is exactly 3000rpm. I would be checking out the diff gears first.

Tru bluhq, that woeks out right according to a gear ratio/speed program I have..
Working on an M40 having ratios of;
1= 3.13:1
2= 1.99:1
3= 1.36:1
4= 1.00:1
and a 2.78:1 diff..

3rd should be 78km @ 3500rpm (close) and 100km in 4th should be 3300

Those who are a bit clueyer with their maths can correct me if I am wrong but a T700 has a 4th gear O/D ratio of 0.73:1 so a transplant would give you 100km @ 2410rpm.
Seems to me like that is a pretty big difference.

What tyres are you running? This will drastically affect the engine speed. Also, when doing rev calc on an auto, don't forget converter slip. Although a trimatic is 1:1 the revs will vary for the same road speed dependant upon if the vehicle is cruising,

Hi Mr Void & Byron,

Yep those gearings are what I came up with too. A 1:1 in 4th as you say.

I run bog standard tyres too ! In fact I should sell the tyres on ebay they are something like 25yo rubbers. The 4 road tyres are Bridgestone Computer Cats

Hi John,

Yep, 4th in a T700 is in the region of 0.75:1 so it will cut your revs by about 25% in top.

You can get an adaptor to fit one of the early T700 (pre-electrics) to an Aussie pattern block. You may need to rig up something to lock the convert

you should be doing about 2200 to 2300 rpm with a 2.78 diff in top gear (1/1 ratio) at 100 kph.

Hi John,

Aren't you in Sydney? Aren't Dellows in Sydney too??

Did one of your Quaddies come off a Blue 253? It should then be jetted, etc. pretty close to right for your 253. If they are off 308's, you'll have to set them up for the 253.

My Qtonner ran 3000 rpm at 100k, with a 202. I would get the tacho checked maybe its wrong. I can't believe a 253 is going to rev more than the 202, the tonners had the lowest diff ratio.

Also the diff may have been changed and the plate could therefore be wrong. The best way to check ratio is to do a run to get oil warm, drain the diff, take the plate off the back and physically inspect the crown wheel and see what it is marked that way t

Update for today.

I have checked the on-car VDO tacho with my old test unit that I have tuned all my cars with, and both match.

I have also chocked the wheels and jacked up the HQ. One full rev of the prop shaft doesnt quite make 3 full revs of the
